New Radio Plugs

Where can I get the plugs to convert my car to a newer style radio, such as one from the 90's? I heard that somebody made plugs that plug into your old plugs and then into the new radio.

ebay has both male and female versions of the plug. Or go to the junk yard and save $$$. You may be able to re-pin your existing wires in, but i don't think so. I think 88 and earlier used bigger prongs than 89+.

You could try best buy or circuit city.If they dont have the one with connectors on both ends you could just get the one for your car with the 3big plugs and then splice the 21 pin connector onto the other end.The 21 pin connectors are readily available at any junkyard as they were used in just about every gm vehicle from 89 and up

Re: New Radio Plugs

thats what i did...spend the $7 at walmart for the female version of the 88 and older style and got the 89+ out of a junkyard for free with the 4th gen cd player i picked up, and made a patch cable. This way it's always reversable.

Re: New Radio Plugs

I have the older style ones in the car and I have the newer style ones plugged into the radio that Im putting in. Is there anyway I could just splice into the new connector?

Re: New Radio Plugs

yes, go to walmart and as if you were putting in an after market stereo, look for the stereo adapter for your car in their audio section, i believe mine was $7 and change, and bring it home, wire the adapter and the harness for the new radio to eachother, and soilder them together, tape em up and your as good as gold.

Here is a helpful site to get the colors and what they are for:

www.installdr.com

from the front page, click "quick radio wiring info" and from the next page, download the GM/Saturn PDF. That should give you a good pictoral and chart of what is what.

To answer exactly what you were asking, yes, you can tear apart the wiring of your car (or add as it may be) with the documention i have mentioned above. It gives detiled information for 88 and older, along with 89+, side by side.
