I got 6 1/2s into dash!!

Ok this was wayyy easy. I had some 6 1/2 Infinity speakers that where in my 94 camaro and I didn't want them to go to waste since they were almost new. They wouldn't fit in my door because I have power windows so I decided to check out the dash. I thought I had read some people tring this but idk I'm prb no the first but I'll tell you what I did. I just removed the entire old speaker and brackets from the dash. Then I just sat my 6 1/2s right in the same spot without the brackets. The tweeter on the speaker actually sticks up farther then the speaker so once the pad is put back on it holds the speakers in place and they don't move at all. You have to be careful when putting the pad back on but it was really easy and sounds a lot better.

Re: I got 6 1/2s into dash!!

So you actually have your dash pad holding the speaker in place?

Your dash pad will crack (if it's not already). Sounds like your asking for a whole new world of rattles, ie, improperly mounted dash pad and/or speakers...

Re: I got 6 1/2s into dash!!

Actually it fits perfect. No rattles. The dash already has a crack but even if it didn't I'd still do it. I mean this is a perfect fit. Everything went back together great. Plus my exhaust is so loud you wouldn't be able to hear a rattle if there was one....got new exhaust coming next week. You don't have to do if you don't but it works great and is not a hack job. Also there is no pressure on the pad because they fit so well, but still don't slide around.

Cant go wrong with Infinity ! I have perfects 3 way up front and 3x way 6x9 in the back. Even turned way up those infinities are crystal clear and you can hear absolutely every sound.

I use to roll with the Kappa series but I have not been able to locate them anymore, musta stopped making it

Re: I got 6 1/2s into dash!!

I tried to get pics but you can't see anything really since the dash is back on. If you really want to do it just get some 3 way infinity 6.5 round speakers and set them right where the old ones were and that's it.

I also want to say that since my dash was cracked slightly this may or may not have helped the install. I know the driver's side is pretty tight so if you crack your dash that is all on you. I'm just saying it worked for me. Yours may be different.

Re: I got 6 1/2s into dash!!

without doing ne thing to separate the front and back of the speaker ur messing up its frequency responce the speaker may also hurt itself if u turn it up to loud because its free air state may make it extend to far

If the dash pad is pressing on the tweeter, wouldn't that make the tweeter useless & not work anymore?

Re: I got 6 1/2s into dash!!

So the speakers are just sitting up in the voids of the dash? Not mounted to anything? Nothing separating the front and back waves of the speaker?

What's stopping the speaker from moving around when you hit a big bump in the road?

Re: I got 6 1/2s into dash!!

The tweeter is a hard plastic on these so touching them does not affect anything. The dash pad hold them down right right so they don't move. I just drove 3 hours of highway, then bumpy roads, and gravel and they are just fine. No one has to try if they don't want I'm just saying I did it and I like it. But like I said earlier my dash was already cracked on the driver's side on and around the speaker vent which may have affected the proper fitting.

I have done this same thing, fit two 6x9's in the dash only bolted to the dash pad itself (it obviously has a steel layer under the leather stuff) Widened the area the original speakers were in, took out the mounting brackets the original speakers were mounted to. No rattles no issues, fits perfectly. Only problem is the speakers' cone gets heated up real well by the sun magnified through the windshield and dried it out and cracked, had to replace them with a speaker that had higher quality cones.

Fit a tweeter in a pillar gauge holder (2 1/16) on both pillars for imaging.

Ya idk I turn up these 6 1/2s and they can't handle just the radio's power and they should handle an amp. I think they may suck too.

That's because after a certain volume level the Head unit outputs a clipped signal in return you hear the distortion in your speakers, this distortion is actually damaging your speakers. With an amp, the speakers will be louder because they will be recieiving clean power via the amp and not the 12-16 watts that the head unit puts out (rms power not max, max power should always be ignored).

Even on an amp you can still recieive a clipped signal via a poorly recorded track on the cd and numerous other ways so you just have to be careful. But putting an amp on the speakers will help get rid of the distortion that you hear.

Re: I got 6 1/2s into dash!!

I wondered if that may be the case but I didn't know for sure. I keep them down anyways because I hate the distortion sound.

Re: I got 6 1/2s into dash!!

also you have them just sitting in the dash is part of the problem too, it's been mentioned that you need to separate the rear/front wave. they are basically canceling each other out.
