Why does my stereo suck?
Anytime I change the volume the speakers fuzz out and make that crackling noise you get like when you have really bad radio reception. Any ideas what could cause that? I figure i've either ****ed up the speakers or some wiring in the backs gone bad. I just wonder if it could be the stereo itself that's going out..

if you have a large wire with high amps running near the radio or speaker wires it could cause that also if its an after radio and your post(positive and negative) wires are backwards it could cause that. Also if your speakers are blowen. Many things could cause it.Wish I could help you more but im no expert and I would be better in person

Re: Why does my stereo suck?
Is it only making the sound when you change the volume or all the time? Is it a stock deck? If it only happens when you're moving the volume ****, your volume potentiometer (****) may be dirty and making bad contact while adjusting the volume. Pick up some contact cleaner from Radio Shack (or any other electronic parts store), spray into the pot (I'd unplug power for safety sake, even though the stuff is supposed to be non-conductive), give it a few turns, and repeat if necessary.
If its doing it at all times, you may have some noise coming in due to wiring issues.

Ya, It only does it when I change the volume. I may try that idea Dan, thanks.
Hopefully it can hold me over till I get a new player.

Re: Why does my stereo suck?
i agree with Dan, if its factory then after 18 years that thing is lucky it hasnt gotten replaced. U can either clean the volume **** contacts and hassle with iit malfunctioning again or jus spend $100 or so and get urself a pretty nice new one that will sound %200 better. they even sell new units that have built in ipod controls and all that jazz. My factory unit in my 87 has crappy SQ even after replacing all the speakers (done b4 i purchased the car) it doesnt even play the left channel. If its one thing GM never took time to design, its there stereo systems even in the new 2009 model cars they suck. I was the supervisor for the mobile electronics dept. at Circuit City here in cleveland (B4 they went under) and the most radio replacements were done on GM and of course Ford products
