What do you guys think of 6 1/2" subs
Whats up guys, I'm finally gearing up to do the sound system on my 87 Trans Am and was wondering what ya'll thought of 6 1/2" subwoofers (component subs)?
I want to keep the system looking stock, or at least close to stock, and don't want to loose the t top storage in the trunk. My idea was to place them in the trunk panel trim, above the wheell well hump (between the spare tire and the back seat), similar to where 4th gens have the 4" component sub. I'm not looking for a ton of thumping bass just a decent amount and wanted to know if you guys had any opinion on the placement and 6 1/2's in general?
On another note, I've been looking into the rest of the system and have been between putting components in the kick panels or the door. I'm leaning towards the kicks as it seems a bit easier, but no one outside of q logic seems to offer them anymore. Is q logic really that bad, and does anyone have any suggestions?

A well sealed door with 6.5 components will be better than trying to stick a small sub where you describe. The speakers need an enclosure of some kind for proper bass response.
I'm using 4" components in the kick panels with a 6.5" woofer in the doors, plus a 10" in the rear well. I have t-tops also, but the box I am using only fills the lower part of the rear well.. like half way up there is a ledge on each side.. that's as tall as my box is, so there's still plenty of room for the t-tops in the stock storage bag.

6 1/2" subs? I have never heard of such a beast. The smallest diameter I have seen is an 8". Would it be possible to replace your 6x9s with the sub or would the magnet be too large?

A 6.5" or 8" sub in the 6x9 area would be sweet. You would have to find a way to seal the enclosure though. I'm thinking fiberglass.
Also, putting one in the same spot as the 4th gens would be neat too and easier.

There are some 6x9 subs also. Tang band makes a neo magnet 6x9 subwoofer for a shallower mount. Check out partsexpress.com

Thats pretty tight.... have you considered a powered bass tube. I don't think that would eat up up the space that your conerened about. Also i've never liked the sound from 6in subs but thats a personal note.

Have a pair of these in my shock towers on my 1990 Mazda RX-7, and they are truely epic, I have them amplified at about 140watts a piece, and they fill the entire car with plenty of sound, setup with the proper backing and they sound much bigger, and the bass is very tight and responsive due to size, but can fill the lows amazingly.
I paired those with a pair of http://www.crutchfield.com/p_1086032...2si.html?tp=95
for the doors, and they combine to make some powerful sound. The Infinitys run with plenty of power from the headunit, and the amp in the back caters to the 6 1/2's perfectly.

Re: What do you guys think of 6 1/2" subs
Thanks guys for your input. I was planning on putting components either in the door or kick (either 5 1/4 or 6 1/2) along with tweaters and was thinking of swapping the sail panel speakers to 6 1/2 as I heard they sound a lot better and if you get a decent set are plenty loud.
Aside from these adjustments I wanted to put some subs in to give a little more bass (I don't need the car to thump like I'm about to do a drive by) rather I just wanted a more full bodied sound with a little diet coke thump, sort of like a really good stock system. At the same time I've been trying to keep the car looking stock so I thought putting an enclosure where the 4th gens have it would achieve this. Have you guys used that 6 1/2 sub or the tang band 6 x 9? If so what was your experience and what kind of bass does it produce?

"...a little diet coke thump" I like that. Have you considered an 8" or a 10" toned down in the bottom of the trunk area, with a cover over it?
