I bought a $5 plug specifically for that reason. It connects to the female end in the back of the deck. The ipod/mp3 player is then controlled when switching the deck to AUX. USB is out for sure. I listen to mostly CDs so I don;t mind not having USB.

Old school!

Its from a 95ish Blazer, Had the CD version but it would not read non-original disks so I said screw it and tried the cassette version and got the mp3 cassette adapter and it works perfect! I had an aftermarket unit but I hardly used it and only listened to the radio. I also hated bringing new cds each time since I get bored with my music very fast. I wouldn't mind the original version but in cassette! Sad thing is the car came with the CD version, eh maybe later down the road.

Re: post pictures of your head units!
I have a pioneer GM/CHRYSLER direct fit deck. As you can see fits better then any standard after market deck offered. It comes with factory style brackets that are a direct bolt in. The fit is nice and flush like rather then the crappy install kits that stick out too much.

Ironically, the following year Pioneer released a black unit which would have looked even cooler.

the HUmount is not just a nice looking face plate, but also includes a mounting system that replaces the stock unit.....it installs very easily, and holds unit firmly. Rick

Re: post pictures of your head units!
Thanks for the response. What about the A/C ducts behind the factory head unit? From what I've been able to figure out, it looks like I'll have to cut those to get a nice flush appearance. How did you make it work?

Re: post pictures of your head units!
the duct work was preventing my unit from sliding back in place....i simply took a hot air gun, and stuck in there to heat up the plastic and when the duct was hot a pliable, i pushed it back a bit and reformed it to fit...the ducts still work fine that way! Rick

Re: post pictures of your head units!
Thanks Razman. I really want one of those light-up HUmounts, but don't want to do permanent damage to the car. The hot-air gun sounds like a good way of doing it.
Re: post pictures of your head units!
Wow going through this gave me some good ideas for building my own flush mount Kit... I was just going to take the kit i had and cut it down but the new plan will be much easier and look way nicer...

Re: post pictures of your head units!
My factory tape deck in my 89 RS took a dump about a year and a half ago, but since i only put about 500-800 miles on my car a year i didnt worry too much about it. But lately i got a bug to fix it so i got this newer Delco unit off ebay and the adpater to go from the old wiring to the new stereo. I read about other people putting them in and having to grind the mounting tabs and cutting the vents behind the radio. Mine dropped right in, lined up and fit nice. Just in time for a car show this weekend, so i can actually listen to music now and not my wife! lol

Just installed this yesterday, has pretty much every option you can get...CDs,AUX input, MP3 CDs, a remote, and a fake car alarm attached to it
Only problem? It's some no-name deck from China lol...sounds great though.

Re: post pictures of your head units!
I put a Kenwood KIV-700 into my Formula about a month ago.
Pretty decent, controls my ipod, can use USB thumb drives (or probably any memory as long as you have a USB at one end), controls a Zune as well.
doesn't have a CD player, which doesn't bother me as I don't use them anymore.
Also has built in memory (512MB) to hold pictures, music or videos.
I'll snap some pics tomorrow afternoon and evening. too tired to take pics tonight.
video on youtube of the deck,

here is the BT900, same as the 700 but with Bluetooth built in, everything else is the same,

Re: post pictures of your head units!
i built this carputer almost 2 yrs ago and built more for other friends and customers and still havent finished installing my own lol. i used all the parts from mp3car.com..motherboard..processor ..power supply etc etc. the screen was a very cheap ebay 7 inch touch screen i got for testing and its held up so far but sucks in the sunlight...if i could read the name of it i would tell you lol. i threw it in there and half molded it just so it didnt look so out of place. when i save up and get a proper xenarc or comparable screen thats good in sunlight i will mold it nicely..and straight and take all the buttons off the screen casing.i hate buttons and switches everywhere.
being old it only has a 500gig harddrive, dvd drive, gps, bluetooth, internet, full audio control 5.1... all built less than an aftermarket quality deck but with more features helps for non stop entertainment and never hear a song twice for quite awhile.

Heres a picture at night with my 7" touch screen dvd player.
I did have to cut alittle bit to make it fit but its a perfect fit and it looks even better in person, also it has the option to turn the screen off at night if i think its to bright or if i see a cop because these are illegal in rockford,illinois....stupid law.
It doesnt say what brand it is but i can tell you i got it off ebay for like 250 shipped,it does have bluetooth, gps, plays all the dvd/cd types and it also supports a SD card behind the screen.
I hope this helps.

Same Pioneer setup I have. It is getting out of date though, I bought it back in 2003. I just like how it fits directly in.

Re: post pictures of your head units!
I have the faceplate from my DEH-P7600MP in a yet-to-be finished S10 overhead console. The faceplate controls the volume and fader functions for my carputer system, which is the Aux input to the 7600. (When the carputer is out of the car, I can still use the stereo.) The stereo itself, along with the HD tuner and carputer, is located in the rear hatch area where I store my t-tops in slots. The amplifier is in the spare tire well. The touch screen is 8", and there is a slot-load BD-RE next to it along with a multi-function card reader under the ash tray lid.

Stock UM7 Radio, 1 of 1084 for the 1990 model year, most were UM6's with cassete players but not mine
Still works great and none of the bulbs are out, to listen to my music I have my Zune 30 plugged into an FM Transmitter that sit right next to the radio, and it works pretty good, the Zune fits perfectly into the ash tray and gives a good clear sound. Have the radio plugged into Pioneer speakers, and I know I could get more out of them with a new head unit, but I love that classic look, unmolested

Re: post pictures of your head units!
If my car were in one piece, I'd currently run my Eclipse CD-5435 (a couple models down from the one posted earlier) with the iPC-106 iPod interface. I don't have any pics of just the HU, but I do have a couple of the entire interior with it. I'm planning on ditching the crappy 4x6 Sony speakers in the dash for something different (6.5" in the doors, perhaps? Need to rebuild the door panels anyways) and the rear 6x9 Clarions for something else. I'll probably go Eclipse all around and even for the primary amp.
Before the Eclipse, I ran a Panasonic for a while (the lowest end one I could afford because I was sick of the stock POS, from a Lumina, since my stock HU wasn't re-installed properly by the PO and shorted out the right rear channel, that didn't have a working cassette deck). And I ran the Panasonic because my Eclipse CD-3402, that I got as a graduation gift, was stolen, while I went to school in Ohio. I hope they ended up tossing that HU as I KNOW it was locked, but it's probably in some Jap car right now working just fine. If anyone knows someone who has one, I still have the original receipt and paperwork for it and it's definitely hot, as am I
. Just thinking about how those guys got it really ticks me off.
:edit: Also, I've had each HU since the 3402 flush mounted... A lot easier to do with the Camaro console than the Bird radio pod. For the Bird pod, I removed the console and pod, mounted the HU with the bracket to the pod with the HU as straight as possible, marked the duct at the rear of the HU, removed the duct from the pod (4 7mm screws, 2 on the top and the 2 on the bottom of the pod), and cut a 1/2" slot in the marked area where the stock HU support is/was. Put the duct back into the pod, the pod and console back into the car, and the HU into the pod. It's a pain lining the HU wiring up with the slot (slot is right at where the Eclipse wiring connects to the HU), but it will flush mount.

Here is my headunit. Its a Pioneer-DEH 12E that I bought from Sonic Electronix along with Pioneer 4x6's and 6x9's. Its actually mounted more flush now than in the picture. Had to grind more of the ducting and shim a bit.
Its not exciting to look at but it matches the car pretty well sounds good for my needs.

I have one of those din 1.5s as well. DEH-45 I bought back in '98, still works as good as new. Wish they still made them like that. I hate teh new ones with multifunction ***** and buttons. Damn things give me hand cramps just trying to turn up the volume.

Re: post pictures of your head units!
this is the best pic of my HU on my computer right now, not sure of the model, its a pioneer, i bought it when i was in highschool as an open box item from Best Buy, had 4 polk db's running off of it but now i have 2 DB drive amps, one 4 channel for my polks and a monoblock for my 12" type R
as far as the HU goes i know its got 3 preouts and its going down....fast lol the pin for the volume has fallen in slightly, so if i want to adjust my volume i need to push in a bit on the right side of the deck, ive tried pulling it out but it keeps falling in and rather than breaking it im just gonna wait til after christmas and pick up a new one from work, i wanted to do a double din nav but being a stick, the payout isnt worth the work involved, flipouts would hit my shifter so im keepin it simple with the single din.

I am going to swap in a later model GM Plain AM/FM Radio into my Formula, and just get an aftermarket iPod adapter that plugs into the back of the Radio and Harness. We used to sell then at a custom shop I worked for.

Re: post pictures of your head units!
This is what i did to my Camaro, i took the face plate out made some measurements and some cuts, also took out the back plate from the inside of the dash that holds the radio to not drop in more then its limited to do so, you will see it once you take your radio out. unscrewed the temperature controller and put the unit right in then pressed a little with the temperature control plate on the unit so that holds it in place real good screwed the control plate back and put the face plate back on.
only thing left is to put a trim on the sides because there is some space so i will post the rest of the pictures once i have done that.

Re: post pictures of your head units!
Here is a pic of the head unit I'm using. I'm running it to an a/d/s 642csi crossover into a 300watt 6 channel a/d/s PH15.2 amp. I'm using Boston Acoustics 6 x 9's in the rear and Boston Acoustics 4 x 6 plates up front. I bridged channels 5 and 6 for the sub which is a nitrous bottle mounted in the rear for the best sound (yes, it's actually the sub, and it's controlled by a sub bass level controller located on my center console) .. I went totally old skool... but it sounds awesome..
