Subs Barely Hitting????

One day they just kinda stopped hitting. I checked all connections on the amp and subs and nothing was loose or off. They will barely. and by barely i mean you can put your hand on them and sorta feel them hitting. The amp powers up and everything fine. Any ideas on what could cause this? I am not overly knowledgeable about car audio lol

Re: Subs Barely Hitting????

Do you or a friend have a spare amp you can hook up? This is the easiest way to see if its the signal coming from the deck or if its an amp issue. Worse case drive to a car stereo shop and see if they can hook one up--this will totally isolate your issue.

I will prob just run to a car audio shop here in town so maybe they can tell me exactly what the problem was. I thought it might have been my alternator cuz it was going bad but I just replaced it and still have the same problem. But thanks for the suggestion

Re: Subs Barely Hitting????

ex.

if they are wired in parallel and one of the coils burn than itll increance resistance ohms and give reduced power . just my theory though

I dont know that much about audio, but what do you mean parallel? I have them hooked up to the amp as two separate speakers, they arent bridged or anything.

Re: Subs Barely Hitting????

its just a way of wiring, some amps are go into parallel when u hook up two subs, my sony used to do that. it would go into 2 ohm mode when two 4ohm subs were hooked up.....

maybe a blown amp fuse?

Re: Subs Barely Hitting????

Done had or blown lots of speakers, but non were from to much power, just regular time related speaker damage.

When they go they buzz or crackle / make some kind of noise.

Speakers with more then 1 voice coil, I have never lost them all at once.
And most of the time was able to keep part of the speaker working. Clip the tweeter if bad or clip the woofer.

I did just happen to lose a 6x9 here not long ago but was only the large cone.
Till replacement I clipped 1 wire to its coil and left the mid n hi hooked up.
Nearly 100% unnoticeable until you get a song playing that does that left n right switch in a guitar solo. Then it pisses me off and I want to go spend $$$$$ but can't.

Re: Subs Barely Hitting????

Well sub out do notput out allot of power or volume, it could be your only hearing them. Can you easily swap it to a reg RCA out to test? It ouwld be louder.

If the inline from the battery is blown then ur amp isnt turning on and u have no sound...Id make sure that ur battery terminal and ground are good.

I'd check the connections in the back of the sub, alsoif you didnt snap em in right they might come loose..

the speaker wires from the amp to the sub get those checked too..

Conect the sub out to another one of your rca's with the VOLUME REALLY LOW just to check if you are getting output...or connect a portable mp3/cd player to your rca in in your amp.

Push in the subs with your hand..if it doesnt feel stiff it mite be blown...I'd take it out and visually inspect it...

hope that helps

Re: Subs Barely Hitting????

Sort of my thinking, if he is 100% sure amp has power, a switch of inputs will change the volume some but still show that maybe the amp is bad, as what comes into it, is what comes out, instead of boosted.

Re: Subs Barely Hitting????

I am off sunday so i will do some tinkering. The sub level on my hu goes from -6 to +6 and if i have it on +6 i can barely feel em and if any lower nothing at all. I am thinking maybe my ground may not be a small enough gage wire so I am going to try and change that also. And yes the amp def is getting power, all the lights come on on it when my hu is turned on. So if i hook the RCA up to just norm outs it will be louder? Getting my hu out is such a pain tho but I will have to just pull it and see if I can get it back into working order cause i miss my beats lol

Re: Subs Barely Hitting????

should be lounder if you hook up reg RCA to it over sub outs.

A ground wire should be as big or bigger then the + and as short as possiable.

Member juice really flows from - to +, thats why cars rust.

Re: Subs Barely Hitting????

ok well, for one, if your fuse on the batery cable is blown, you could be getting tricked, the signal wire that turns on the amp from your head unit an sometimes still be powering your amp enough to turn on or apear that its on when realy it isnt

also i would check fuses on the amp itself, mabie hook up a random sub to the amp, does not actualy need to be in a box or anything, you just want to use it to test your amp, mabie pick a cheep one up at auto zone, kragen, or somthin

mabie walmart too

that should norrow it down and point you in the right direction

Re: Subs Barely Hitting????

The two fuses on the amp are good. I havent had time to check under the hood for my inline yet though but am off tomorrow so i will get to that. My buddy has an amp and subs I am going to play with and see if I can narrow it down to the source of the problem! Thx for all your help so far guys.

Re: Subs Barely Hitting????

Take the sub speaker wires and test them with a AA battery + to + and - to -... If the subs push out, then all is good... If 1 out and 1 in, that's a problem, if both in, that's a problem, if no movement, that's a problem too... If both push out, they are wired correctly and it's either the amp / deck / rca's...

That is a good point, you remote wire to turn on the AMP can carry a good ammout of juice.

Re: Subs Barely Hitting????

Its FIXED!!!!! I replaced the RCA and it works beautifully. I hooked it up to the rear outs and i dont like how I cant really adjust it like i could on the Sub-outs. So I will prob switch it over tomorrow but I am just happy I got my 12's workin again!!!! Thx for all the help guys. Behind the Head unit my stereo had rubbed on my RCA and worked its way right through it.

Re: Subs Barely Hitting????

Good deal, least it hadn't shorted out anything for good doing that.

I once had a lightening shows in my back window, my inverted 6x9s in a box had the chrome basket. [why I inverted them to show em off.] Well I was pushing so much to them that the juice was arching from the speaker hook up to the chrome basket on them a good 1/2in away.

Had no idea how it all survived as it had done it for some time, I just happen to catch it.
