Audio Setup/Gear: I'm Clueless HELP
Alright i'm replacing all my audio equipment in my 1988 Camaro IrocZ and all i got to spend is 350$.
-
I know nothing of how audio equipment is for sound qaulity which is better or worse ect and so forth. I been talking to a custom shop near me and they'l put anything i need in for free since they know my dad who is a giant car parts distributor in the state for the past 32years for chrysler. I just need the stuff for them to put it in.
-
I do not want any of the loud boom boom bullshit from the giant subs and everything. I want good bass, but not over the top
--
What Them and I agreed for set up is to put in a JVC KD -R800, since it seems the best for price and use with only being 149$
http://www.productwiki.com/upload/im...vc_kd_r800.jpg
-
For Speakers amps and sub i have no f'n clue to be honest.
We are planning on putting 4x6s back under the dash pad and 6x9s back in the side walls. however as for brand/style/power i need to decide yet i don't understand any of it. so i need suggestions.
-
for the back they say they can do 1 of 3 things.
1. 10" Sub in middle of well in box with 2 small amps on either side
2. 10" sub with 2 more 6x9s on eitherside with an amp
3. 2, 10" Subs in Well in box on either side with a amp in middle. ( but i'm worried there would be too much boom boom base which is what i definately do not want)
-
My Budget as stated up above is only 350$ and installation is free. But i need suggestions on what equipment would be best for sound quality and for the $.
Also if you believe there are other setups that would work better and still come within my price range please suggest them!! I need all the help i could use when it comes to audio equipment and add in links to equipment aswell as pics if you can. price ranges and explainations lol my knowledge is zip for this stuff.

Re: Audio Setup/Gear: I'm Clueless HELP
I would do a decent 5 or 6 ch since your not looking to do anything crazy but you would need a lil more of a budget as well some decent 6x9s for your rear Kickers are nice or the infinitys are nice as well and a decent 4x6 in the dash Jvc's are great heads plus they have a 5volt pre out which will make it sound even better. Then a nice ten in the rear in a sealed box off the 5/6 ch i would suggest best bang for the buck is the 07 CVR's from kicker as well off a 5/6 ch will sound pretty damn good.

I listen to ALOT of the same music you lisetn to, I have installed now a pioneer 4x6 and 6x9 #TS-A6963R and RS-G4643R and a Sony CDX-L350 and my system sounds good. (Don't buy sony anything, the deck is HORRIBLE). The best bang for you buck is probably pioneer but for music I don't really think you need a sub.

Alpine is the best in my opinion . I had alpine everything in my 88 and it was the best system at the highschool . (This was 3 years back)
If you know someone that works at best buy , the discounts they get on car audio is amazing . Got a $240. 12in alpine type R sub for $105. with my buddys discount . One 10in sub would be fine for your needs .

If you don't mind not having a warranty, go to ebay. You can brand new 6x9s and 4x6s for a fair price. You can also find some decent prices on 10" subs, since you dont need anything special, just find a decent brand with about 150-200RMS power handling and that'll be plenty enough.

bump. good stuff so far but i need as many ideas setups/gear. i need all the help deciding so i don't get jipped on performance or buy more than i acturally need.
Re: Audio Setup/Gear: I'm Clueless HELP
no most people at first told me there was no way it would sound good. oncve they heard it they were suprised. it is a board that seals pretty good around the edges and is open on the bottom. the amp is a autotek amp powering the 6X9. then i have 5 1/4 two way in the dash powered by the stereo right now. i am going to put a tiny amp in place where the ecm went. just enough bass for me.

Re: Audio Setup/Gear: I'm Clueless HELP
What I am running in my camaros are Infinity Kappa's.. I have always had great luck with these speakers and they are great all around imo. I would say def get you a nice 4 channel amp to power these other then what the deck offers for a powerout.
Give or take the Kappa's aren't cheap but I def think they worth the cash.

Re: Audio Setup/Gear: I'm Clueless HELP
For your box I would go with a sealed with out a doubt, it will provide tight and accurate bass which is good because you listen to rock.
For the sub I would go with something in the 500W RMS range, good bass but not a thumper. The amp must match the sub woofer's specs or else it will be worthless. It's like an engine, all must be relative.
MY choice: Sub Pioneer DVC 4ohm 12" Amp Hifonics 1200W Monoblock
Wired at 4ohms you'll have 400w RMS and it will do what I think you want to accomplish but when you feel the need to get more power the amp will accommodate that in the future without the need to get a new one.
Assuming the 350 is the budget after the head unit, tell the people installing them to wire it up as 4 ohm. Consult this for wiring: http://www.the12volt.com/caraudio/wo...s.asp?Q=1&I=42
For the cabin speakers, just look at RMS and fin a four channel to work with that with the proper impedance [ohms]

Re: Audio Setup/Gear: I'm Clueless HELP
For $350 I'd go with a head unit that has good quality and cea rated. Then just skit the subs/amp and buy yourself a nice set of quality 6x9's and some dash speakers. If you have money left over, maybe a cheap small amp for the 6x9's, but then you're getting into money for wires cables and fuses.
Whatever you do though, don't buy anything from your local car audio shop or crutchfield. Most car audio shops like to sell you cheap speakers. Regardless, they are most always overpriced and you can find the same speakers online for 30-70% less. Crutchfield is only good if you find deals like buy one get one free. I know I purchased 2 rockford P1 8" subs for $90 shipped from them on a buy one get one. The shop down the road was looking for $80 each, "on sale".
For a budget, Dual is cheap and CEA rated. Not that bad of amplifiers and you can get one for $50 from walmart. I have the one, and its held up pretty nice.
Bottom line though, buy speakers online, its way cheaper. Keep to brands you'd find on crutchfield, but find them cheaper someplace else.
Hope this helped.
EDIT:
Forgot to mention, put most of your money into the front stage. Its closest to your ears and will make or break the system. Or, if you just want it loud and sounding almost good, big speakers, big amps

I recommend buying online if you don't mind NOT having a warranty. The reason the shops charge alot is because thats the MSRP (market suggested retail price) and is dealer authorized so it comes with a full manufacturers warranty. Buying online you do not get the manufacturers warranty so if something breaks (even if a defect) you are SOL. And some dealers will work with you on prices.
Just a little info for yall

Re: Audio Setup/Gear: I'm Clueless HELP
Yes, always buy your amplifiers from an authorized dealer. I just bought a new amp from the shop down the street just because they were and authorized dealer. The amp itself was $350 and these amps are notorious for never having defects. But what do you know, I'm the only person in the world that gets a DOA sundown amp. So I sent it in and its getting fixed now for free. I would have been S.O.L. if I bought it on ebay or from some non-authorized website.
But...
Warranties on speakers are pointless. 99 times out of 100 when you bring your speakers back to the shop because they are blown/defective they will not replace them. It will always be put on you that they were wired wrong, turned too loud, used improperly, etc.
And thats because most of the time its true. The warranty is only good for defects in the speakers. And that 1 time in 100 the speaker is truly and obviously defective.

Re: Audio Setup/Gear: I'm Clueless HELP
thanks for some advice,
-
the guy i'm going to be dealing with however is the reknown audio specialist basically in the entire area, he does everything. My dad has known him for the past 21years so he's giving me gr8 deals, i'm only gonna be paying for most likely just factory price and then what ever labor charge for him to put it all in. It's good to know people and have connections
like the JVC KD -R800 for example if i did get that i'd be paying only like 80$ for it when it's about 150+ in a store or website.

Re: Audio Setup/Gear: I'm Clueless HELP
Used on craigslist I bet you can find it for 50 bucks.
I know I got my Kenwood KDC-MP642U off craigslist perfectly working for $60, and thats like $200 new, or it was at the time, now I think its cheaper.
Used is your friend on a budget, but again no warranty.
That is a great deal though, for a new head unit. Looks to be pretty cool too with the USB hookup, just be careful if you only want to use your ipod on it, some stereo interfaces suck with ipods, and they don't let you use the actual controls on the ipod via the usb connection. My dual HU from walmart went to the top of my 200+ artist list every time I hit the back button and it would take me another 3 minutes to get back to where I was lol.

Since you are working with a shop they will know what to build and how. I would roll with a pioneer head unit infiniy speakers a mtx mono block amp and a image dynamics idq 10 that will give you nice highs mids and lows. you might have to up your price range by about a hundred or two once you start getting wires and an amp a sub wont give you a bump but a nice bass brum and bass line hit.

single sub and a good 4ch for your mains on one side, and a sub amp for the sub on the other, heres mine just finishing it up, gotta pic up some vinyl tomorrow and should be able to wrap it up by the weekend
simple run down of my set up: alpine mrp-f300 for the mids/highs (alpine type r 6x9, and 4x6 plates in the stock locations) sub is an alumapro alchemy RX SQ 12 sub (dvc) running off a alpine mrp-m500. deck consists of a simple alpine cda-105
If it was possible to hide everything, I would have. my goal is to make the sub box/amp rack blend in as well as possible. Grey vinyl will be stretched over it all to match the interior. the amps are recessed will be covered by the boards you see, but they will be opened up in the center with a square hole routered in, the main boards will be vinyl covered as well, but the amp openings will be black speaker grill cloth.
heres a few pics of the buidl so far.
Im not a bass head either, but I do like good sound and thats hard to get in these cars w/o lots of custom work.
My car is loud and wanted to hear the music while driving down the road with the tops off

Re: Audio Setup/Gear: I'm Clueless HELP
as you can see the 12 barely fits (thus the fiberglass pod), I was originally just planning to make it flat, but didnt want to offset the sub and have both amps on one side. The speaker has a huge 6.5" depth too so mounting on one side would have been tricky too
