Can too much volume blow a window?

Someone told me in firebird and cameros of that generation, you have to be to careful what kind of subs and amps you put in the back. I was told i could blow my back window out or damage it. Is this a myth?

Re: Can too much volume blow a window?

i think there is actually truth to this.... our hatch window is very big, with very little support.

I'll put it to you this way. If you can provide video evidence of you blowing out a stock, undamaged, hatch window with subs, I'll pay for the replacement.

Have fun.

I cant speak for f bodies, but I can vouch for an 85 corolla. I blew out the back window in high school. It was cool, if you really cranked it, you could actually watch the windows and especially the back actually flex and vibrate from the sound.

Our hatch windows are extremely strong. Even if you had enough sound pressure in your car it is likely you would see damage somewhere else before the rear hatch would break.

Re: Can too much volume blow a window?

Think of sound pressure like the basic principles of electricity. The sound waves are going to take the path with the least amount of resistance, so although they are directly under the rear hatch the sound pressure is going to escape any where and every where it can in that car thus relieving pressure on the rear hatch. So unless you had a perfectly air tight seal in the car which ain't gonna happen, and you had a very very large amount of power under there it ain't gonna happen. I've personally had 5,000 watts plus under mine and would have still needed an additional 15,000 plus an air tight seal to maybe crack the back window..

Re: Can too much volume blow a window?

I've seen contests where thet attempt to blow hatch windows and windsheilds and I can tell you that its going to take more than what most people have in their cars. Unless you've got thousands into your system, compete professionally, your probably not going to do anything to your hatch.

Agreed, your not going to want to listen to music that loud anyway. My only problem that I finally got around to fixing last week was the third brake light lens rattling against the housing. Even the hatch shade closed doesn't rattle.

Re: Can too much volume blow a window?

unless your planning on having an all out competition system i wouldn't worry about it when i crank up the stereo in my car the hatch glass doesn't shake at all but the roof of the car shakes a bit you can put water drops and they will bounce a little bit lol my system is only pushing like 600 or so rms.

Re: Can too much volume blow a window?

Windows only break at competitions... or in competition cars.

Like people say above, it could happen, but with some very powerful subs. Its all about the spl, not watts though. You could crack glass with one 1000rms 8" woofer through a bandpass tuned to your vehicles resonant frequency, but again, thats only what they do for competitions.

Anything that doesn't require an upgrade to your charging system and you're fine. Plus, you will know if you're at risk of breaking your window, every single panel on the car would be going crazy before.

Re: Can too much volume blow a window?

The glass is tempered anyway, it won't shatter or blow it, it might crack but its going to be extremely difficult to do. I've competed in SPL competitions with my Camaro hitting a 145.7 legal on the dash using a Termlab. There is an AC Mic device but it was used years ago, proved inaccurate and is now obsolete. The Termlab is the only sanctioned device used to measure decibel levels for car stereo competitions and is always used and sponsored by NASA for rocket launches.

Unless you're ride is 100% airtight, used for competition only (non drivable other than to move on/off trailer) its going to be almost impossible to crack your back hatch.

Re: Can too much volume blow a window?

lol, me and my brother have set off car alarms before with our bass, my camaro, and he has a chevy 1500...... so its pretty loud. but our windows aren't broken. Yeah sure you can break your windows with enough sound, but not before you blow out your eardrums. i listen to my music pretty loud, some might even say obnoxiously loud at times, but when it comes to blowing out windows, it is going to take more than you want to listen too, ever see those competitions on tv where they wear protective ear muffs, or aren't in the vehicle when the windows blow? i think you'll be just fine.

Re: Can too much volume blow a window?

it depends on the pressure coming out not the volume it could be done but not very likely it would take several amps and killer subs not going to happen.

Re: Can too much volume blow a window?

unless your running big subs and big amps i dont think its possible to wreck the hatch window. you cant fit a big enough sub nor big enough box in the back to create enough pressure to do that kind of damage.

yeah not in our cars but my friend ( a hispanic ) had two twenty-four inch speakers and four amps in the back of his galaxy 500 and blew the window in bits but can't fit anything in our cars that is big enough...
