84 Swivel Head Unit Replacement??

Hello All,

I have an 84 Berlenetta and am trying to replace the current head unit with an aftermarket one...Problem is I have never seen another camaro with the same radio as mine has...it sticks up from a black tube and is a square swivel unit that has am/fm/cassette...any advice on how to change this before I cut it out and fabricate a box? Any wire harness I can use or rewire needed? Thanks for the help!!!!

I would think the easiest way to get an aftermarket installed, is just go to a junkyard and get a center console out of non Berlenetta model. Those should be easy to find.

Then sell your Berlenetta console to someone else, who might need it for restoration. I wouldn't cut it up..

what he said. as motivation, you will 100% end up on top when you sell it.

Re: 84 Swivel Head Unit Replacement??

Putting a standard console into a Berlinetta won't work. It won't line up with the dash properly and you can't use the standard HVAC controls. Without major surgery, it's just gonna look crappy.

There is a box you can mount to the Berlinetta console that holds a regular radio. I have the link on another comp, I'll get it posted in the morning along with a pic of it installed. I really like the way it looks and fits.

I don't know for sure if the wiring is the same as a standard car (allowing the use of pre-made adapters). I'll take a look thru the shop manual and see what I can find.

Re: 84 Swivel Head Unit Replacement??

I've had a different experience with the console and radio. When I bought my Burly they had attached a generic box to the top using large screws ruining the upper plate etc. and it looked like crap. I still need to find a lower radio that works now.

Yeah. I loaded these pics before (year or two ago), but I'm having trouble linking to them.

Re: 84 Swivel Head Unit Replacement??

I just took the "t" out of the link you posted. I looked at the attachments I made above and compared them and noticed the difference.

In red below:

Anyways, does that part fit in place of the stock pieces or sit on top of them?

It looks better than what I originally had on mine and probably a lot less work than swapping consoles.
