How would a single 12" type R sound?
SO ive got this 12" type R sub chilling in my living room, some guy came into work and insisted that it was blown and sounded like crap, and that he wanted a W6 from JL, I tried telling him its not blown but apparently an audio installer doesnt know how a blown sub sounds and how a good sub SHOULD sound like.... in any case i pulled his type R, shaved the box out a bit for his W6 and sent him on his way, on my way to toss his old sub i noticed that the positive wire for the second voicecoil came un soldered so i soldered it back in place, hooked it up and its hitting hard like it should
free stuff whoo!
Now today i built a dual chambered triple ported box for our showroom floor, i was just tinkering since i havent done much porting so i was winging it, after finishing it up carpeting it and cleaning it i plugged it into the first sound room which is our entry level one, being a W1 i figured itd be pretty lame, i was pretty suprised what 3 3" ports did because this thing hit harder than our W6's in room 3!
Now to the point im thinking of making a single ported box for the camaro with this type R given my experience today, and the fact that its just sitting around, can anyone give me an idea of how hard it will hit in a ported box? Im not sure how ill set it up yet if i wanna do a dual chamber triple port like i did today but i know that the type-r's pack a mean punch, and seeing what one of our crappiest subs did with some simple porting im curious....
I was thinking i could do a single for now and just make provisions to put a second one in later if im not happy enough, make the chambers identical and have a port coming from each one to a single port in the center, that way i could just cut the hole for the other 12 and another terminal cup etc etc
any experience with the type R in our cars guys?? Im gettin pretty ancy i wanna hear it lol but i want the end result to be worth the work

I had a single 12" type-r in my last third gen and was very happy with the output in a sealed box. a good box and some good power, its more than most will ever need.

I don't know how you guys had such luck with one of these a while back i bought a 10" alpine type r and put it in a sealed box. The output has horrible, it sounded nice but it couldn't even move my rear view mirror at all. I have owned a lot of subs and i gotta say this one is the worst.

Re: How would a single 12" type R sound?
500 is more than enough power lol my experience with the type R's is that they gotta be ported, no questions asked its a must or youre dropping all the money for nothing, i can get a dub 1 to shake our sound room no problems, and a sealed type R can barely come close, i dont really sell a customer a type R in a sealed enclosure like ever lol
im probably gonna go ahead on this, just for kicks plus i still gotta pick up an amp that will be decent for it, im thinking of going with the PDX5 so i can also power my polks my biggest concern is going to be port noise, if its going in a trunk ports are your best friend cuz youre not gonna hear the port noise but if its firing up towards the hatch its kinda making me sketch, then again the bass it will put out should drown it out combines with amped polks

the older type r subs may not be as good now but they were the best back in their day
