Subwoofer enclosure cubic feet

I bought this subwoofer, along with an amp, from a coworker fairly cheap.
The problem I'm running into is that I've read about the minimum and maximum of volume needed for the box varies by each subwoofer. I can't find any information on this particular subwoofer probably since it came in its own enclosure.
So, if i use the cubic feet of the dimensions of the box its about 1.8 cubic feet. I'm assuming this is the volume of my enclosure I should shoot for. Is there a "safe" range I can play with when it comes to a 12 inch subwoofer?
Also, what would be the downsides of a box too small or one too big ?

if you're staying sealed, you can be "close enough" without issue. bear in mind too, the specifications are taking into account the outer dimensions - its a bit smaller in there from the thickness of the material (you lose between 1 - 1.5" all around depending on if they used .5" or .75" material)
a typical (and very rough estimate) 12" will work with about 1 - 1.5 cu ft of air space in a sealed setup

You can call Blau as well to get the exact specs. Also if you don't get the deep sound you want, try adding some fill to the box (make the woofer think it's in a bigger box).
