Good subs and amps these days?

It's been a while since I've messed with any subs or system setups, but I'm going to be putting something in my 86 camaro and am starting to do the research on what I want to get. I've already put in a good head unit and replacd all the factory speakers with some descent sounding speakers. But I have no clue what to buy for sub woofers anymore.

I would like to get them as cheap as I can that means most likely I will need to buy them online. My local audio shop recommends ZStat, but I've never even heard of them before, and when I look at their website, according to their counter they've only had 552 visitors.... Maybe they reset it daily?

Anyway, I'm going to be building my own box to save on some money there, local shops want around 150 for the generic slanted box that is not a really tight fit like I want.

I have not fully decided if I want to go with 10s or 12s yet, probably 12s but if they sound good and hit good 10s would be fine. My favorite kind of music is trance / techno and I listen to some alternative / pop, if that helps. I'd like to spend less than 100 per sub, but if it's a little over that for something good then that is fine.

And then I'd need to know a good amp brand and size to push the woofers. I'm hoping the amp isn't to large, I would like something that I can fit into the spare tire area or something like that to keep it hidden and clean looking.

Thanks for any advice / opinions on this!

Re: Good subs and amps these days?

For a high power and small in size amp I would look at mmats pro audio amps I have one and it is amazing. As far as subs go I asked this question a little while back and I was told that some good subs are the Alpine type r's, Jl audio w series and the memphis mojo. I'm probably going with the w series being right now I got hifonics budget line subs but they sound decent.

Re: Good subs and amps these days?

I have a typeR 12 (old style) in my saturn with a Alpine V12 amp on it and I am fixing to put 2 10" type R's (2010 models) in my sons car. I will be using a Alpine PDX1.1000 to push them. Believe me when I tell you these will pound in a ported box, or be crystal clear and still pound in a sealed box, and they dont require huge boxes. Recommeneded box size per 10 is 12.5 x 12.5 x 10. Should be a sinch to make two of those fit in your F-body. The PDX amps are super small for their output. Off the top of my head the PDX1.1000 is only about 12" x 12".

You can find the above subs and amp on ebay cheap. I picked up that amp for $200 (used) and another $225 for those subs (2ohm coils) shipped.

Re: Good subs and amps these days?

I've been away from the car audio for a wile too (42 and a family) but i still in contact with the car audio guys and it appears that the Kicker L7 still the sub to beat, impressive output for the power required and very strong when properly installed, i was impressed when i got my L5

Re: Good subs and amps these days?

I have had L7's as well. They do sound good, but require more air space then equivilent size subs and they are power hungry. Your amps RMS rating really has to be at or above the RMS rating of those subs to make them sound good.

I still prefer the Type R's over L7's. Type R's can be had on ebay for cheap and they pound. They do require some power like the L7's but sound much cleaner and accurate then the L7's. Type R 10's or 12's have nearly identical power requirements. I reccomend a amp that can put out 500 watts RMS per sub you plan to use.

Re: Good subs and amps these days?

Thanks for all the input, I ended up going to a local small car audio shop over the weekend. Picked up a set of 12" Kicker Comp series for 90 each and a PowerBass 800 watt amp for 135 and bought one of their prebuilt boxes instead of building my own so that I didn't have to mess with it right now, although I will still probably build my own later for a tighter fit, theirs doesn't look bad back there.

It sounds great, a lot more than what I expected for what I paid. I wasn't looking for anything to shake the mirrors of the car next to me, although these can do that, I just wanted to add a bit of bass to balance out my system. They are actually more powerful than what I wanted, I should have went with 10", I actually had to turn down the bass some to get them to where I wanted.

Adjust the gain on the amp to dial in the subs.

HiFonics D class amps are great for powering the subs.

RE is not what it used to be in terms of quality. They are now made in China and shipped back.

Fi Q subs sound amazing.
