I have been thinking of doing this for quite some time and since the weather is crap , I have decided to go for it. I took a stock head unit , gutted it and replaced all the inside workings with a new pioneer head unit . So it has the latest in sound and features while retaining the look of a stock unit.
Let me add this , before you go crazy on your stock radio , this is not a project for the average person. This was a HUGE pain in the butt ! Took days and tons of work . I also had a spare unit. I did not do this to the unit that is original to my car.
Extending the wires

In the stock units cage.

Thats really cool, I'd like to see more. I replaced the after market unit in my Firebird with a stock unit, just because I can't stand the look of the aftermarket units in our cars. Pretty awsome solution here.
I purchased a stock UX1 radio on Ebay that had a custom MP3 player outlet built in. Works great. Able to hook up my iphone to it and listen to the digital radio / Pandora etc.. I'm curious to see how this turns out for you.
