would 1 12 sound better then two?

i know sounds like a stupid question but i got another camaro and it came with two mtx competition 12's in an ebay box that doesn't go down into the lower section of the well and it doesn't sound half as good as my two 10's in my other camaro. so my thinking is maybe one speaker using that air in that box would sound better. it is non ported and i'm using a 1000 watt amp. i could modify the ebay box to go down into the well but id like to keep that space open as I'm doing a turbo build on this car and want to mount the battery down there.

please chime in.

in a correctly sized and built box, 2 subs will be louder than one of the exact same (again with a correctly sized & built box) and "sound" as good. however, you've introduced quite a few variables - different subs, different amps, different boxes. they could have wired up the subs wrong too - another variable.

thanks for chiming in dan. ya i know its not apples to apples but iv heard 12's before and these are only 3 months old and they just sound like poo. the 10's sound full and crisp/clear. these 12's sound distorted like there in a truck box or powered by a way to small amp. that box is pretty small when you take out the well not being part of it. any suggestions?

Measure the inside dimensions of the box (both sides) and calculate the cu. ft. of each side (they might not identical).

Then check the specs on the 12 to see what size box is optimal.

Chances are the box is too small for the subs..especially if you're getting a 'booming' sound.

You could then try adding polyfill to the box....no, I mean add more fill.....yes even more than that.

Lastly, if you're keeping in the box, make sure ALL the inside seams are sealed, if not, silicone is your friend.

If the box is too small and polyfill won't help, you might try using the box with just one 12, sealing the opening for the other 12 and cutting the inside to make one air chamber instead of two.

Make sure those subs dont sound bad because they're out of phase.

Fire up the subs. Flip the pos and neg wires on one of the subs. Does the bass improve or worsen?
