2001 GM Stereo/CD in '82 Berlinetta
My son bought a 2001 S10 Blazer that had a factory CD stereo in it. He wanted to put in the Sony unit he removed from his previous vehicle, and gave me the GM CD unit when he took it out. I put it in my '95 Silverado - liked it so well I bought another one off eBay (that had the harness pigtails - big selling point...) for my '82 Berlinetta. It also happened to come out of a 2001 Blazer, according to the seller, LKQ.
I installed it in the Camaro tonight. Went fairly smoothly. I got the schematic from this site http://www.modifiedlife.com/2001-che...iring-diagram/ (which I found searching this forum) - it was nice that the speaker wire colors didn't change in 19 years. It seems to work fine except for the dash light dimmer function. I hooked up the chassis brown wire (paired with the 12v orange power wire) to the "illumination" wire on the stereo, and the gray wire in the same chassis connector as the switched power to the "dimmer" wire on the stereo. I checked that the brown wire had 12v with the lights on regardless of dimmer, and the gray wire reduced voltage when the dash lights were dimmed before soldering the wires up. The display dims when I turn on the lights, but the button background lights don't dim with the dash lights. It's not too big a deal, as I rarely dim the dash lights, but I'm wondering if I got something wrong, or if the '82 dimmer resistance is different than the 2001 expected signal.
Also curious about the speed sensor function (which I haven't tested yet). I assume it needs some VSS signal from the PCM, but the linked schematic didn't reference it. That function works in the truck with my son's old unit. The Camaro has a 2000 LS1 in it, so I assume some VSS signal from the PCM would feed the stereo.
Finally, I also have an XM radio kit to install. It can use the FM receive function, but if the 2001 stereo can input it directly, that would be nice. I assume that's what the red connector that come with the stereo is for (AUX), but don't really know, nor the wiring if that's what it is.
Oh, in case anyone else is curious, the other mods I needed to make to install it were to switch the back pin off of the old Camaro unit (the 2001 pin is a larger OD), and elongate the hole in the back brace to the left about a quarter of an inch (had I known I was going to need to do that, I probably could have used the pin that came with the 2001 unit and just moved the locations as I enlarged the bracket hole). Due to hole locations on the side mount brackets, I only used two screws instead of 4 like the original Camaro units - could have used 4 if I had drilled two more holes.
I don't spend much time on this forum, and although I did a search, I hope you can forgive me if this has been covered before.

Okay, further searching indicated that the unused green wire is for the VSS input to get the SCV to work, and a PIE GM9-AUX will adapt the XM radio.
I already had XPlod speakers in the car, this unit drives them a lot better than the earlier cassette stereo units I've had (from '82 to '90, I've used 5 or 6 of them so far).

Upon seeing what you're running, I suppose mine just doesn't work. No big deal, the radio works and that's what matters to me.

It will be a few days before I can get back to it to try to hook up the VSS signal.
It wouldn't surprise me that the 3rd gen VSS signal won't work correctly. I'm assuming the 4th gen signal will.
