1989 Trans Am door speaker advise

Is it possible to put 6 1/2 component speakers in the door/kick pannels? I'm planning on getting some image dynamics ctx65's and 2 sundown sa8" subs but need to know hot to mount front speakers (component system).

Make sure the door is deep enough behind the panel to allow the speaker to clear as the window passes and with the window down. For me, I cut a baffle (speaker ring) out of 1/2" MDF and mount it on the panel (behind or on your choice) and use that to mount the speaker to. It makes for a stronger surface to support the speaker's weight.

as already mentioned, you'll have to add a baffle for clearance (and strength, since our door panels are basically cardboard), especially if you have power windows. I did it on my last 3rd gen, but not again. You'd be doing yourself better by getting some kick panel enclosures for the components.

I'm making custom door panels from MDF and fiberglass currently. It's a PITA but I'm working on it.

Here are mine..pair of 6.5" in each door. You can also see the q-form kick panels.

Where can I get a nice set of kick pannel inclosures? Thanks, Brad.

Just saw them on Crutchfeild, look SICK! How do I mount the tweeter? Never done it before just normal speakers that aren't component systems. Thanks, Brad.

qforms are the best premade out there without the custom price tag, but they do need a little work out of the box (had a set for my GTP). make sure to add a couple layers of fiberglass to the back to stiffen things up.

just cut the tweeter and mid holes to fit your components and you're good to go

silly me forgot to mention that. on my last setup, i used not hardening clay instead; similar reasoning, different approach. something i picked up from the DIYMA guys. those pieces went from being under a pound together to almost 5 lbs each!

I have a pair of the Q-Logic Q forms sitting here I won't use because they are too close to the clutch for comfort for my size 11 wide feet. If your interested I can post pics and work a deal.

Re: 1989 Trans Am door speaker advise

I'm working on wiring tomorrow and Thursday / Friday my friend is coming over to help with the stereo...
I'm thinking a wooden plate that mimics the lower front part of the door... I have a 6.5 mid bass, so we will angle it, and glass it probably... I'll throw up some pics if we get it done...

Re: 1989 Trans Am door speaker advise

I have a 91 Formula... and I'm putting a 6.5 mid bass speaker in the door... a 4 and a tweet in the dash for a 3 way set...

I wanted to keep the angle shown on the door, but move it forward (door is being completely recovered).... I didn't want to run the fiberglass that far back cuz I didn't need to, plus, it would hit the seat belt housing...

I did want to keep the same angle, which follow the big plastic door puller / handle...

Then we built 3 similar size templates... a bit smaller than the base...
1 will hold the speaker (with legs below it, one goes one top for depth, and the third will have grill cloth over it...

It won't sit inside, (as the other fiberglass link I posted) it will sit on top... They will be angled up and towards the person (about 10:30 and 1:30 on a clock face)....

The 3 pieces were screwed together for the moment, to sand / route edges, we will take it apart (cuz 1 piece is the grill) and then glass the other 2 pieces...

That top piece (actually 3) will be angled (not too much shown in picture), but you get the idea... may be a while before more updates on this... used 1/4 inch birch plywood...

Re: 1989 Trans Am door speaker advise

Lookin good so far keep me updated... that looks right for what I want I want to run a extra set in the doors (6.5 components) off a 4 channel amp that will also power a set of high power 6x9's in boxes right behind the back seats plus il still have custom 4"woofer and tweeter component setup in the dash (woofers) and on the pillars (tweeters) not sure what kind are what kind of crossovers will prolly be home audio woofers and 3/4" tweeters and a decent crossovers them and some good 3 way 6x9's in the sails running off the head.... plus my d3 15's in the hatch with a 2000 watt amp
