dbl din , a little differant

like a lot of us 3rd gen owners we want to upgrade our systems to what a new civic comes with these days. so I want to install a double din android unit .. just installed one in a buddies tundra last night im very impressed with and started me wanting one in the camaro..so what i want to do or know has anyone tried moving the heater unit down to the stereo placement and using that space for the double din unit.basic switch places...the reason is i would really like the unit up higher for viewing ease. i know theres a metal bracket in there that i would have to cut and fab a bracket and a face plate which i can do.. unfortunately i don't have access to the car until april as its in storage so i cant look.. so has anyone tried that? i have searched and i do like the guy that moved it to the ashtray position but i would prefer not cutting the console..

Re: dbl din , a little differant

Ya I installed mine last year and thought about dropping mine also. however the heating controll cables got in the way of the deck install so instead i raised mine up about a 1/2" to make room for the double din. Modifying the bracket was still required.

I also had to make my own plate to cover. Modifying the original didn't leave any space between the heating controlls and the deck.

For some reason the double din plate on the link looks like its covered in a vinyl. I also turned my ashtray into an Ipod docking station.

Re: dbl din , a little differant

oh I understood. The cables for the heater controls was getting in the way which made it difficult to get the deck in above it. They were too tight at least in mine anyway. I tried but couldn't make it work.

Maybe you could get longer cables? I'd be even curious as to how he got the controls in the ashtray location myself.

Re: dbl din , a little differant

Wow! just searched it and took a look. I guess he swapped out some cables and got up in the dash to get slack on others. It can be done! I wasn't gonna go through all that but good luck with that project if you decide to go ahead with it.

Re: dbl din , a little differant

Pretty sure you could just flip that bezel upside down? Maybe not. Been a while since I have been in my 'maro. Is it a square or a trapezoid?

Re: dbl din , a little differant

I really want to try and do it .. it would just look better and the function would be more user friendly with the deck up higher as you really don't use the heater controls only a couple times a day if that..

Re: dbl din , a little differant

I personally think having the heater controls under the radio just wouldn't look right.
I think what Racer did is the best DD conversion I've seen yet

I'm going to attempt this most likely this summer

Re: dbl din , a little differant

The bezel is slightly tapered at the top so turning it upside down is a no go. You would have to fab a new plate.

Re: dbl din , a little differant

I moved my HVAC to the passenger side. It works for now, but I plan on either lengthing the hoses/wires in order to place it inside the center console compartment.

Or install some fancy flip down assembly so that the HVAC is in its current passenger side location, with the ability to flip up so that it tucks up out of view, then flips down when I want to adjust it again

So theres 3 other possible ideas.

I got a beat up console cover from a wrecker and molded the ashtray portion into an iPhone dock. Lol Luckily it worked out awesome. Holds it good. Have some close up pics I'll post later when I'm at my other computer. It was a custom build
