could it be the amp?

I have a jenson 300 watt amp, and me and my friend wanted to see if it would punch his MTX thunder4000's 10's. We hooked it up and and started hiting them pretty hard, then the safty light on the amp came on. it also comes on when i hook up my 12. the 12 is old and is only 150 watts RMS max power, so i understand that. whats could be wrong. the amp punchs my sony xplod 6x9's fine.

If the impedance is too low or if you're overdriving the amp, it will shut down. Driving 6x9s doesn't require as much power because you don't feed so much bass to them, so the amp doesn't work as hard.

My guess is that you are bridging the amp when you hook up the sub. The Jensen amp may not be bridgeable. When you hook up your 6x9s, they are in stereo and 4 ohms each. When you hook up a 4 ohm sub in bridge mode, you amp sees half the resistance (2 ohms) and puts out more power (and heat). Chances are you amp isnt bridgable.
