check out the installation tech articles on thirdgen.org's tech section. It should help answer a lot of your questions. It's really hard to say "yeah it's easy" or "no, it's hard" because it depends on a million and one factors. Hooking up wires per-se isn't very hard, but running them can be challenging if you're not too handy, and building a box is beyond the abilities of most people.

it really isnt that difficult as it is time consuming, the biggest hassle is like jim said, running the wires, you can make it easy and look icky, or just take your time and use your inginutity and run the wires so it looks good to your liking.. then the other biggie is the box like jim said, a lot of people rather buy a premade one rather then try and waste the wood.. even myself cant do it and im an installer.. thats why i dont touch the saws.. the world of car stereo can be fun and is a learning experiance...
