QForm panels?
QForm panels?
Id like to build up my stereo over time and get it up to a 10-12 speaker system. Id like my sony 6x9s in back, sony 3.5" in the front w/ plates, two kicker subs in the rear, and 5"s in the kick panels with 2.5" tweeters.
what i wanted to know is, are the Q-Form kick panels any good? Do they look OEM? And most importantly, are they going to get in my way while driving, I have a stickshift car so Im a bit worried about them getting in the way when im playing with the clutch.
thanks
steve

I didnt really like the q-forms when i had them. When i had the q-forms in there, i had to rest my left foot against the qforms and my shoe was touching the brake pedal at the same time (this is on an automatic). Plus, when going around a turn fast, there was really no place for me to put my left foot to brace myself, so i kinda slid around in the seat. The pass side doesnt stick out as far at the d/side does. They are also just molded in black and painted what ever color you buy.

Just a suggestion. Go with kicks OR dash speakers, not both. Any time you have 2 different speakers playing the same thing, you get all sorts of lobing effects, and because they each have different sound characteristics, it just sucks. Even if you use identical drivers, their positioning differences will cause phasing issues, timing issues and will generally distroy your imaging. I have essentially a 3 way system in my car, just like at home. I've got 12's out back, and a single pair of separates up front. I don't even have 6x9s, although if I did, it would be just the stockers, and they would be there just for fill like in my 86.
Look at some cars winning sound quality events in shows. Most have very few speakers, and virtually all of them will have all of the speakers grouped together.

Hey Jim,... if You read this again, I just wanted to ask.. You only use Your dash speakers for the highs and mids? I've never heard of that, but it makes sence about the phase cancelling stuff, and all. What do You use for the dash speakers? They'd have to be something that could handle a good bit of power to keep up with the bass coming from the rear, right? I've had only My 6x9's and subs, before.. but I only recently got some new dash speakers since I've had the car. I'd like to try this, though.. thanks as always! Brant

uh, yeah. What he said
In my 86 I've got boston 4x6 plates and a single 12" (soon to be a single or pair of 10s) in back. There is a gap in the sound between the top frequency of the subs and where the plates start to be useful. In my firebird I had the same plates and used 8" free air subs in the 6x9 location for midbass. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't worth the effort either.
