Want to buy a security system for my car, what's the best for stereo protection?

I can get security stuff relatively cheap where I work, so this weekend I'll probly have a remote start/security system installed... There are a few extras I can buy for more money and I was wondering what the best would be for keeping theifs out of my hatch... I don't really want the car to get stolen, either.

I can get a thing that chirps if a person is within like 3 feet of the car, and the siren goes off when they get in the car, I thought that would be good since none of the power stuff is hooked up to the hatch itself.. I can also get a backup battery, which sounds like a good idea incase they cut the main battery immediatly..

Would a remote start alarm work decent with a v8 TBI firebird? Or would it be more trouble than it's worth?

Anybody have any ideas?

to tell you the truth there is not a car alarm out there that can stop a profesional thief. i have had 4 differnt alarms and my car has been broken into 4 differnt time with out the alarm doing a **** thing. all the thief has to do it shock the back fender of your car with a tasser and the alarm is disabled. so i don't and wouldn't waste my money on on. even if it goes off in a parking lot now days knowone will look. thats my .02

It all depends where you park. If you at a place with alot of security or people walking in the parking lot, get something that flashes and makes alot of noise. If you park in a lot behind a store where there is seldom people walking about, no alarm will help you. You can get a pager that will page you if your alarm goes off, but you have to be close by. Better be packing something too if you happen to confront a thief.

I'm not as much worried about a professional thief as I am some punk highschool kids who live in my nieghborhood.. They are smart enough to break into an unarmed car but I don't think they would know how to break into a car with a security system in it..

after my car was broken into back in june while i was at work, and took my whole system, and a brand new 9mm glock, i bought an alarm with a pager transmitter. it has remote start, keyless enter, and trunk opener. it has a warn away chirp if bumped, and the alarm if hit hard enough, or one of the doors or anything get's opened. it pages me if the alarm goes off at all on the transmitter itself, and tells you what wrong, like if a door is open, or bumped or so on. i feel more comfortable with it, cause even if i had a normal alarm in the past, i wouldn't have heard it anyway while i was at work.

If somebody wants your car bad enough, they will get it regardless of what type of alarm system. However, you can make it much harder by parking in open, well lit, populated areas. Furthermore, keep all of your valuables hidden where nobody can see them from the outside (Best yet....don't even leave valuables in the car!!)
If buying an alarm system, I suggest staying away from the ones with warning chirps, NEVER get an alarm that uses the horn for the siren, and definitely get a motion sensor.
I have an Alpine setup that works like a charm.

i got my system ripped out of my 92 bird. then i got a viper alarm system and a brand new rockford fosgate setup. no one has broken into my car since. i would suggest getting the beeper thing though, because people really don't look when alarms go off and you can't hear it inside a mall or movie place. the viper system has done just fine for me though. also, taking out your cd players face really deters them from breaking in. i always hide or carry mine.

When i bought my alarm, i had them put in the back-up battery and i got the perimeter sensor in case someone stuck their hands inside my t-top hole or open window. My deck is the pioneer 835 and it has DFS, so if someone opens the door they have 10 seconds to put my deck face on or hear a horrible screach through all the speakers besides the piezo tweeter blaring at them. Also they have to move around the club on my steering wheel. And if all else fails, the $500 Lo-Jack system will track their butts down before they damage my baby too much. Overkill? Nope, it was all worth it.

I have the alpine 8063 in mine. It has a 2 stage motion sensor so you can even leave your tops out or windows down and it'll go off if someone reaches into the car. it will even go off if you use the key to pop the hatch. I tried :-) My next addition will be the pager. its supposed to work a 1/2 mile away.

LoJack is a type of tracking device that police can follow to find a car.

I agree with Pukka. I've had an Alpine for 2 years and I'm very happy with it. Its got the basics, plus I added a starter kill relay, keyless entry, trunk popper, hood and trunk security, and when I disarm it the dome light stays on 'til I turn the key or 30 seconds have passed (no more fumbling in a dark car). A comparable system dealer installed runs like $350. Someday I'll get around to the battery backup.

As for Lo Jack, it's a regionally offered vehicle locator program set up with state police in select states. MA happens to have it. Cruisers have a LoJack locator in them, and when a vehicle is stolen, the LoJack office programs the stolen car to send a signal to a cruiser, thereby allowing the police to find the car, hopefully before much happens to it. Not all areas offer it though, and it is pricey.

I have a Clifford in my RS.I think it is a good security system. It has all that extra stuff that only a lazy man really needs (like myself).
Most would be car thiefs are looking for easy targets.Something they can get into and be out ASAP.When they see the flashing light in your car they know it won't be all that easy.Unless, like mentioned above, they are professionals. But the majority aren't.
So most systems would be fine.Unless you live in a high risk area.then spend the extra bucks to get the best available.
Plus a security system will even lower your insurance. Not alot, but some.

I've got the Clifford 800-IQ in my '89 Formula...it's real nice. Unfortunately, they were bought by DEI a couple months ago, and I no longer have a local Clifford dealer to get one installed on my '01 Trans Am. But the high-end Viper systems look like they have all the same types of goodies as the Clifford...motion, glass, and shock sensors, remote windows/lights/trunk, etc. I hear the Alpines are good too.

just for your information that myth about the tasser is totaly false. althought the tassor puts out a relitivly high voltage 50000-80000 volts it in terns puts out current in the milli volts. not a leathal dose for humans or the five amp fuse on the main power line of the alarm.

car guard makes a steering collar clamp that raps around the plastic cylinder where the ignition and turn singal are. most GM cars of 80's were stolen by breaking collar by the turn singal to expose gears underneth this takes only seconds to do. these clamps kept my car mine for years. used to have buick grand national in NYC which had a street life of about 5 min. i had mine for 6 years before i sold it.
