Well, depending on the size of the basket and magnet, you should only have to use a dremel or something similar to make clearance for the speaker (basically make it more round, although it might fit without modification), and drill holes wherever needed to mount the speaker.. not too difficult. I'd start by taking out my 6x9's and holding the 8" up to the hole and see where it's going to contact, and go from there.

Matt, i hate to say this, but 8's in ur sail pannels would just be a waste of money. i really hate to rain on ur parade but the sail panels don have enough volume to get good bass reproduction. just look now, find a car w/6X9's mounted regularly w/basket in the trunk and listen to the bass.......sounds almost like a sub. now listen to urs........sounds like sh*t. the sail panels are too shalow to get good bass outof them. 8's just will sound flat and u will get very little bass out of them, but hey go for it and see what happens. i wold love to hear about the results if it came out nice.

I have actually seen someone do this. It sounded good but not great, but all he wanted was mid bass. They had to cut a rather large hole into the side, actually the whole side out and custom make a fibreglass box in the hole, He had to refab a cover to fit and cover the subs but it looked good. But you have to find the right sub to get a good sound.

Anything is possible if you have a good enough imagination, and an unlimited cash flow.

A friend of mine at work was also saying that Orion makes a very shallow 8" free-air woofer that we could probably get to fit in our doors.

Please let me know what you do. I'm planning to put a pair of Kicker Free-air 8's in my car to carry out the midbass duties. I would simply go with 6x9's, but that would be too easy! Also, the 8's are marginally better than 6x9's. The specs look pretty darn close, but the actual sound is just a bit better. I hope to get to this sometime in January.

Block is in shop!

Awaiting results from all 8 ASE tests.

Starting to look like the Kicker poster child!

Chris

My friend was going to put an 8 inch in the door for mid bass, but the problem came up that once installed the speaker would prevent the window from rolling down all the way, We scraped the idea, since you can not cruise in a Camaro with the windows up

knighthelm...you could also build the doors out slightly. A crude example would be a couple of slabs of plywood screwed together, with an 8" hole cut in the middle. You could then carpet the plywood to match the car, or make something nice and custom with fiberglass. (But I'll never give up my factory cupholders i9n my Formula anyway.)
