What's a good sub/amp combo that doesn't cost an arm and a leg?
What's a good sub/amp combo that doesn't cost an arm and a leg?
I want to get a little more bass out of my system, but I'm not willing to dump hundreds and hundreds of dollars into stereo equipment that will just get stolen. I saw an MTX sub/amp combo at CC for $299 and was curious if anyone knew anything about it? Would this be a nice kick to my system? Could my money be better spent buying subs and an amp seperately? TIA

You might want to check out http://www.crutchfield.com - yes, they're a bit more expensive than a usual joint. However, if you have a credit card, and spend over $100, you can get their split-pay option. It lets you spread the total cost out over four months.
I think they were selling some subs on there that came with a free box, too. Kickers, maybe? I just checked their site, and it's not listed anymore, you might have to call them and ask if they run that special anymore.
Get the specs from CC of the MTX amp & sub, then visit Crutchfield's website, and see if you can do better.
But if that Circuit City deal includes a box for the sub, it sounds like a good deal to me.
Don't forget! You'll still need hookup wires for the amp. Buy them too cheaply, and the amp will sound like crap. Honestly, I usually buy my car stereo equip elsewhere than Crutchfield. Then I spend $120 at Crutchfield for power hookups (power cable, "main" in-line fuse holder, distribution blocks, ring terminals, etc), and spread that out over 4 months.
