Aftermarket alarm harness question

Anyone know if most aftermarket alarms have the same plugs. I have an older audiovox prestige remote start I want to upgrade to a viper or avital unit. It looks like the power and interface are the same. Does anyone know if they are a standard configuration?

I don't know if those brands are close or not but I can tell you that alarm harness are for sure not a standard thing.

Unfortunately, the plugs will almost certainly be different. If you're trying to avoid re-running the wires, get a copy of the old alarm's install manual and cross reference the wire colors. Take the time to make yourself a cheat sheet so you don't get confused and smoke your new alarm or the car.

I still have the original manual that came with it. I did install it myself years ago. Just all the plugs on the new DEI units look the same so I was just wondering if there was a standard with them.

They are not the same. I've installed the brands you mention over the years. There are differences that make them not pin compatible.

Re: Aftermarket alarm harness question

Does the current alarm have an external antenna plug? I added one to an Ungo I had years ago and it DRAMATICALLY improved the range. If it doesn't, I highly recommend the next one you buy does.

Nope it just has a wire that comes out of the box. I have it pulled up going across the top of the dash. I have a spare unit of the same brand that has the external antenna but no antenna or harness for it. Never found it or one online for it. Its from like 2002 or so.

You can extend that antenna with a piece of 22 gauge wire, or something close. Be sure and make a nice solder joint. If you decide to extend it, try and run it in 2 directions at right angles to each other. In other words, up the pillar, across the top of the windshield and then toward the rear under the headliner.
