Bad channel? GM, but not F-body

I suspect I have a bad channel(s) in a stock GM cassette player in my 85 Blazer. One speaker has been very low in volume compared to the others, and messing with the balance/fader makes it act up worse. Now I heared a popping or cracking sound and none of the speakers have much volume. Obviously it's the head unit, but I'm curious as to what when wrong.

Delco decks suck. The soldier joints are prone to cracking.
