Speaker Handling

I have a pair of front and rear Cerwin Vega speakers in my camaro. According to the boxes, the front speakers can take 50-100 watts and then rear 60-120 watts. What will happen if I get a 600 Watt amp, and one 10" and one 12" subwoofers. Can the speakers handle it? What about without the subs?

It all depend on the amp, and how many channels. By the front, I am assuming you are getting the 4x6 plates, and teh back are 6x9's. These speakers are both Stealth Series for Vega and I now run them in my car. Is the amp 600Wrms? These speakers can handle 50x2 front and 60x2 Wrms rear. I have found you can over power these speakers with good results. If the amp is 600Wrms and 5 channel, and you are very lucky, it might be 50x4, and 200x1. The 600 is usually representing the bridged mono mode and so only represents using the entire amp for one speaker. I am using a RF 100a2 for the 4x6's, RF 250a2 for the 6x9's(62.5Wrms each), and a RF800a2 for my lone sub(pulled te other two for now). All my speakers are Cerwin Vega and I am very pleased with them. They sound drasticall better when you amp them, however. You also might want to look into a cap for the system. Hope this helped

just noticed the sub part....do not power these subs in a series!!! you will find a lot of problems and be limited to the smallest driver. Also, what brand. If it is Vega, you can drastically over power it. My vega124 is being pushed by 1080Wrms by itself with a 1F cap. Most speakers do not like this kind of power. Also, make sure you have a good box for these subs. One in a proper box with good power will outperform two done wrong. In addition, I would get more amps for these speakers, they really NEED to be amped. The second number in those reading was the peak, and is primarily irrevelant.

No good ever comes from using 2 different size/brand subs together. It sounds like hell and your output isn't any better than 2 of the smaller size would have been.

Sorry jim, I am of a different opinion. I installed four 8" with two 15" into a station wagon a couple of years ago and it sounded great. That thing hit hard and boomed deep!! I don't know his levels, 'cause I haven't talked to him lately, but I heard he was doing good.

Stinger, were you using the 8s as midbass drivers or were they playing right down to 20hz along with the subs? If you had them running in a pass-band configuration from say, 60hz to 300hz, then that's understandable, but if you had them running the same frequencies as the 15s, you could have gotten better sound from just the 15s.

Obviously I cut the 8"s off. I think it was at 50hz.
