6x9s: 2way 3way compatibility question
6x9s: 2way 3way compatibility question
Are the stock 6x9s 2 or 3 ways? (i haven't looked in a while) whichever they are, do you have to replace them with the same thing? ex: if you have 2 ways, can you just plug in 3 ways without changing anything else?

Stock speakers are neither. They are 1 way. One driver for the entire frequency range. You can use 2 ways, 3 ways, whatever. It is all 100% compatible. Just make sure to listen to the speaker and if you like how it sounds, go for it.

according to what criteria? I can find 4 ways at a flea market that sound like a monkey banging on a drum, and I can find Boston CX 2 ways that sound very, very good. The number of drivers doesn't mean much. If anything, a speaker with more drivers can very easily sound worse because if the multiple drivers are not tonally matched and used with very high quality crossovers, it results in a very poor sound. Most speakers that use more than 2 drivers, or sometimes 3, are usually cheap speakers that are just adding more crap for the sake of marketing or the "Bells & Whistles" effect.

If you can't get good quality sound from two drivers (i.e. 2 way 6x9) then there is something wrong with the design of the speaker itself.
Look at a 3 way speaker. The two that are over the main cone are generally not that much different in size. Maybe .5" or so difference?
If you can't get the highs you need from one tweeter, what makes you think the other is going to help that much more? (Bah to super tweeters, nonsense garbage)
Besides, the more crap you put on a bridge over the main cone, the more midrange output you are blocking by obstructing the speaker.
