Just added the 1985-92 Firebird double din brackets & bezels to the website. The brackets make a double din install much easier, especially with one of the new Kenwood radios with a smaller chassis. We will making a Youtube video later this week, but with the new Kenwood DMX4710S and the brackets it's a very easy install with no cutting or modifying of the car. Just line up the brackets, wire the radio and install. You can use other double din radios with the brackets but since the radio will be larger there isn't as much room. The brackets have 4 slots which will allow you to move radio forward/backward and allow for different brands of radios that may have different mounting hole locations. The bezels are 3D printed, available with or without the checker pattern and available for digital dash cars with the smaller opening. Link and pics below:

These are cool. Do you have an ETA on 82-84 cars?

 

Still working on the 1982-84 cars. Couple of challenges on those. In order to fit a double din you have to cut a lot of the center console out, once done you don't see it. But no one makes new consoles and used ones are crazy high, so do you think most people would be ok with cutting the console? Also heat/ac controls need to move up some (1/8" to 1/4" depending on which bezel you have) which requires making some more changes, looking like it will work best to replace the metal plate that supports everything. That would make a clean install and make everything sturdy but would make the mounting kit expensive compared to the other kits we sell (guessing around $100). Based on solutions to those challenges and popularity of the 1985-92 kits will determine when the 1982-84 kit is available.

 

That all makes sense. I'd be down to trim a bit but I'd be a little less likely to do any major hacking in the console. You're totally right, they're a hard part to get. That head unit you guys sell is exactly what I was looking for also!

No problem! It's definitely something we would like to have available. Working on solutions that require as little modification as possible, trying different bezels and other ideas. I'll post some pics tomorrow and tag you so you can see what needs removing.

In these pics you can see the metal plate and plastic behind it would need to be modified.




Moving the heat/ac controls up makes more room, but would require new mounting holes for the controls which would make a new metal plate an improvement plus the metal plate would reinforce the center console after cutting out the middle.

 

Maybe I'm wrong but the head unit you have earlier in this post would fit with just a little trimming of that metal piece, no? Couldn't that brace just be trimmed 1/2 inch (or so) deep to clear that section of the screen.

 

That part of the radio is about 1/2" thick and the metal brace is about 3/4" so wouldn't leave much. The new Kenwood would make the install much easier, most radios before were about 4" deep. The Camaro brackets are very close to fitting the 1982-84 Firebirds so I might modify some of those instead of making a new bracket.

 

I'll open up may dash and look this weekend. I'm probably down to "trim" that piece a little. If necessary, fab a new support.

who makes the bezel you have in the pics?

 

Unleaded Designs made the bezel in the pics. He is working on getting some "installed pics" from customers so you can see better what's needed and if it will work without moving the heat/air controls.

 

Just added a new video to our Youtube channel showing the install using the new brackets.

 

We should have brackets and bezels for the 1982-84 Firebirds by the end of October. We will also be doing a Youtube video showing the modifications needed. Overall not bad at all with the new Kenwood.

I'm having a new bezel made also, I was just using that one for test fitting. On the new bezel the radio opening is smaller for less gap around the radio with the new Kenwood.

 

1982-84 Firebird double din bezel and brackets are now on the website. With the Kenwood radio there is very little modification needed, you could position radio slightly forward if you didn't want to modify at all actually.

The 82-84 firebird brackets/bezel/Kenwood came in today. It all took 5 min to bolt in. The brackets are machined well and locate the stereo perfectly without any cutting of the center console. The bezel fit perfectly over the double din stereo and lined up w the bezel hole well. All in all, this has got the be the best way to get a double din setup in one of these cars. Thanks screaming chicken!

I'll post more pic w it on after it's wired in. The goal it so use it not only for audio but the phone mirroring should allow me to display my EFI management on the screen.

 

Thanks for the quick install and feedback! Let me know on the EFI management, some apps allow you to mirror and some don't for some reason. That would be very cool it that works. After designing the brackets I think I would prefer the 1982-84 dash/center console in my '85 Trans Am, my dash is pretty beat up anyway and I already have a nice 1982-84 center console from this project.

That's a nice radio. We installed a similar radio while testing the brackets (Kenwood), it will fit but takes all the available room top to bottom. Touches on the bottom and top.
