1984 Camaro Berlinetta radio replacement assistance
Hello all! I've recently just started trying to replace my head unit/radio in my 1984 Berlinetta, and I've run into a bit of trouble, as I seem to have wired something incorrectly. I'm curious if anyone else has a Berlinetta and has replaced the swivel radio it has stock with something a bit more modern, and if you could help discern which wires are which! The radio isn't receiving power, and the digital speedometer and other internal dash lights typically present when using the headlights go dark completely. Not sure if all the wires the car has stock are necessary, because it comes with a cassette player that required power on the previous radio.
I can supply photos as needed if anyone thinks getting a visual idea would help! Any help is greatly appreciated!

A Berlinetta radio wiring is much exactly the same at the Dash-to-radio plugs. The stock radio comes in 2 parts,..... and you've got to remove both parts if you are installing an aftermarket radio. This is the wiring schematic for your ride:

The radio plugs should look like this:

When it comes to the Cluster/IP/Console backlighting problem,... While the headlights are active, make several attempts to adjust this rheostat "dimmer" control on the side of the Blinker Pod (red circle). There is a chance that it's simply out-of-adjustment.

If there is no change after adjustment and the cluster still goes "dark" when the headlights are turned on than the problem is almost certainly the Light Module. The Light Module gets mounted under the pass side of the dash & looks like this:

Wow - Hi John! HUGE fan of your website! Thank you *so* much for the reply.
Shortly after I posted this, I kept poking around, and got the stereo to work and everything was going swimmingly! Then, my ground wire touched the power wire and shorted *something* out (I know very, very little about cars overall because I'm self taught, and am trying to learn as I go, I know, I'm a fool!), and I'm still trying to figure out what. I lost my interior lights, and my radio went dark, but everything else was working, including the speedometer with the headlights on. I've replaced my fuses, and tested the relays, which appear to be working. Now knowing that there's a light module, I may check there! if you have any leads on what may have shorted, I'd be grateful.
Thank you *very* much for taking the time to reply and show off photos, as well as running the website! It was incredibly useful for the diagrams, and overall having the history there is so cool. Finding info on Berlinetta's is so sparse, and most of what I can find is either here or from your website!
I hope you have a great night, and I hope to hear from you again! It was an honor to hear from you!

Re: 1984 Camaro Berlinetta radio replacement assistance
Thanx for the kind words,.... Much like you I'm a simple man that's about 95% self-taught, so don't let that feeling ever hold you back !
What ground wire ?? What Power wire ?? Knowing what wires were shorted together will allow you too trace those circuits for problems.
That statement could mean different things to different people. When you say interior Lights do you mean the Dash Housing/Console/Radio backlighting, or are you describing the courtesy Lights ( floor and roof console ? When you say the radio when dark do you mean the digital display readout,... or the backlighting. To me it sounds like your describing the Dash, Console, and radio backlighting.
This schematic shows the backlighting(Dimmer)circuits. I would REPLACE the existing 5 AMP INST fuse with a new fuse just to be sure that you've got a good one installed. The GREY wire is the one that feeds voltage to everything for backlighting when the headlights are turned on. The voltage will be variable depending on the adjustment to the Rheostat control on the side of the Blinker Pod.

Best advise I can give you is to buy/acquire a voltmeter so you can start probing wires !! ( a cheap basic voltmeter will work,.. but a digital multimeter is best.)
