one boston pro 12 vs two pro 10's
one boston pro 12 vs two pro 10's
what do you guys think?? I'm gonna be pickin up new sub(s) soon and right nhow I'm only gonna have the cash to buy one at a time. I'm definately goin boston pro series either way, and to me sound quality is more important that rediculous bass levels. at the same time, I like to bump the **** out of my system at times. so what i'm looking for is a good sounding, tight setup all around (which i think the 2 10's will give better than the 12, feel free to correct me if wrong) but I also want to pound them a bit now and then, as i said before. either way, I'm gonna put a 2 ohm load (w/ 2 10's @4 ohms, or one 12 @ 2ohms) the amp i'm using is a phoenix gold xs 2300 which i know is capable of feeding some power to the subs, especially at 2 ohms (my MTX 5000 10's didnt hold up long, they make weird noises now...) and i'll be making a custom box by myself, so please let me know what you guys think...thanks

given the subs the same power and box set up the two tens will be louder because they have more surface area to move more air. 20 verses 12. the 12 inch doesnt have enough excursion to make up for it. go with the two tens you will be happy.
If you're concerned with sound quality over loudness, I say go for the single 12".
If you put loudness above music quality, then got with the 2 10's.
The 2 10's will definitely be louder, I think by 3 Db?
If I remember right, double the surface area gets you a gain of aprox 3Db (anyone confirm/deny?)
The 12 on the other hand, will play lower frequencies at a higher Db; it just won't be as loud in the frequecies the 10's are capable of producing.
Does this make sense?
A single 12" in the right box can get you plenty of loudness. My single JL 12", pushed by a Rockford 160w amp, hits at 125Db and it is very clear all the way down close to 20 Hz.
My uncle has 2 10" JL's in his truck with 300 watts between them. His definitely plays louder, but mine is clearer and is capable of reproducing low frequencies his 10's can't.
There's my 2 cents

If you are not trying to get enormous bass out of your system, I would probably go with the 10's. I personally like 10's cause they tend to be tighter sounding (in my opinion). Although, I have 2 12" Boston Pros and when I am running only one, it sounds pretty good.
From my experience though, those subs will produce pretty more bass than....normal I guess. Sometimes I think 1 12" is more than I need to get a clean, crisp sound. I say two 10's...again.
How many watts does that amp produce? The one thing to watch with the Pro Series subs is that they are very power hungry. You can easily give them over 1000watts without any problems. I would try to stay on the higher side of their handling range (600 watts or so). Just my opinion.
