Removable, lightweight, fiberglass boxes

I'm starting to create some fiberglass boxes for my 10's. I need something I can easily remove for autocross. I also want it to be light weight and good looking. Here is the basic shape I have so far. There will be a mirror of it on the right side with amps in the middle. When I make more progress, I'll post more. Any comments?

how much airspace you got in there ? looks tiny.

Seeing the pic, I think the mdf baseplate would be the best way to go.

Thanks DJ. Your opinions mean a lot because of your experience.:hail:

I measured .58 cu.ft. outside volume. I still need to reshape a major curve on the back side which should bring airspace up to about .62-.65 outside volume. I'm shooting for between .5-.625 internal volume. The pic I posted is a day outdated and a little smaller than the current design.

Looks good and what's your plan on mounting them? Don't forget there's a Gastank underneath that spot.

I'm thinking somekind of bracket going underneath and attaching to something behind each side trim panel. If that doesn't work I may go with a bracket going from the underside of each box to the sheetmetal behind the backseat, in front of the gas tank. There's about a half inch clearance there. Any other ideas?

Looks like a unique design that ought to fare well if you get the air space figured out...

As far as mounting, you can always silicone or liquid nail a 1/2 or 3/4" section of wood under the carpet to the sheet metal and use that as a mounting point. This is a common way for building amp racks in that location and having a good solid base to screw into without going through the sheet metal and hitting the tank...

Just a thought...looks good though

Here's an idea.... how about making it clamp to the rear seat post things (I know.... real technical) and if you have T-tops, then using those things too. That way it could be easily removed.

Hmmm... Not bad ideas (MDF uner carpet, and clamping thing). I don't know what you mean about T-tops. My idea was to put the T-tops in the well where they belong (IMO). By the way, who's Carl??

Aside from the mounting point, what do you guys think about the overall design? Would you reccomend a different angle or position? What do you think about a single countoured box for both subs (similar to the one I've shown, but linked in the middle)? If you had a fiberglass box mounted in your car, how would you like it to look??

Here your opinions DO count!

Carl is GndPrx. I love the design myself and with one on each side and an small amp rack between the two would look pretty cool. Just a thought.

The t-top things I was talking about were the little metal loops that stick up that the hooks for the T-top bag slip into. So that maybe you could, as you put the box in, have a metal hooks on the back side to hook into the metal t-top loop things, then as you lower the front end, have a latch similar to that on the rear seat that would also hook onto the post for the rear seat, or maybe just some kinda clamp. That way it would be totally anchored, but come out in a snap. Works even better if you put your t-tops in the well so that the metal piece is free. And one piece would work great for this too and with your current shape, just add an amp rack in the middle. That would be bad a**. As for the angle, I really don't know. Looks awsome so far though.

Once again, thanks for the comments. I should have the other side and the amp rack done by Monday. I'll post an update then.

You read my mind.

Actually I'm ramping up to open a business making all types of custom enclosures. I plan on starting business around May or June. Of course the design I posted would be available along with other vehicle-specific enclosures for things like RX-7's and Miata's. Then I also plan on offering fully custom built MDF enclosures too.

Since I'm not a paid advertiser here, I probably shouldn't say much more than that.

Nobody's yelled at me yet course, I try to restrict my forum posts to simply announcing sales and gp's, and keep all the information on my site.

I will be selling things really cheap for the first 6 months or so as an "introductory price" to get the word out. Stay tuned for the announcement.

The first model will be for 3rd gens. I've decided to go with a 1-piece design at first though. It will be for (2) 10's with an integrated amp rack in the middle. With the original 3-piece idea just wouldn't allow a big enough amp rack. I should have new pictures within a couple weeks.

Thanks for the compliments!

Just how did you make the mold for those. I'm working on a project with fiberglass and I just can't get a good mold made. I tried the Great Stuff Foam, but it deformed from the shape I wanted after I had workded on it for a while.

You might want to try a denser foam. Most Urethane foams come in a variety of densities. I would think that would help it hold up better. I haven't had to deal with foam yet, so I'm not too knowledgeable on that subject.

I've got the final shape, but I still need to do some filling and sanding. I'll try and get some updated pictures by the end of the week. If all goes well, I should be able to start production on this model in about 4 weeks.

To all those who have been subscribed to this post, I'm starting a new one called "Fiberglass Sub-system Part 2". This post is getting too long.
