Amp cuts out...why????

I have a Profile 440XL I took out of my old car and transferred into this one. I mounted it in the rear glove box. After about 20min. of driving the amp just cuts out and stops putting out power. If I turn the volume down and wait for a minute it comes right back and works for approx 5 min. then happens again. Is there anything I can do about this???? What can be causing this???

to me it sounds like ur amp is clipping, the glove box gets no ait circulation, i haven't had any experience w/profile amps, so i can't say anything about how ggod their heat sinks are, but try moving the amp to like uner your seat and see if it is better. i think the amp is just heating up too much and clipping.

I could be wrong but I think the term "clipping" has to do with inducing too much gain on the input signal. I think (hope) what Will is trying to say is that your amp is reaching it's thermal shut-off point. It has a circuit that will turn itself off if it starts getting too hot. If you have to use a Profile amp and you have to mount it in that compartment you might try getting a small electric fan for it.

Clipping is when the output voltage of the transistor exceeds the maximum rail voltage, so the signal is incapable of being any larger. But that's a different problem than what you have. Yours is going into protection mode because it's overheating. This is one of many unfortunate consequences to using a "budget" amp. To eliminate the problem, you need to drive a higher impedance, or keep the amp cooler by better ventilation.

Thanks...I was thinking along the same lines of a heat problem. I gutted the glove box hoping that would give it adequate ventilation. What kind of fan can I use to cool the amp or what amp do you recommend that puts out 400-500 watts/4chan. that will fit in that location. I would like to keep it there for security reasons but if I have to move it I guess I will.

Just a fan isn't going to help. It's in a concealed area, so once you heat up that air, all a fan is going to do is move hot air around. The only thing that may work is to duct air from the vents in the plastic cover, through a fan and directly onto the amp.

or get a hatch shade and leave the amps on the rear deck. no one will smash out your windows if they don't know what's in there.
