i was thinking about getting a notchback to replace my hatch. my question is that i have my subs in the trunk and i was wondering if they would stick work with the notchback.

Yes. The notchback is no different than a regular hatch except that it takes up more interior space. As long as the subs are below the height of the hatch, you'll have no problems.

more than likely they won't sound as good as they did anymore do to the lack of space.

They'll sound fine. You're only losing a couple cubic feet of interior space. If anything, your bass output will increase do to the smaller cabin size, plus the shape will direct all of the sound forward, so it will be like horn-loading your subs.
