Help me choose a system.....

Ok, currently I have an Alpine 40-watt deck, and Polk Audio 6'9's in the rear, and small ones in the dash (I don't remember the exact size). I'm not one of those guys who wants to dump a grand+ into a killer system that's only going to get stolen anyway. But I'm looking for something that will definately give my current setup a nice kick to it. I listen to lot of rap, hard rock, techno, etc so some good bass is in order. I can get one of those "boxes", that basically fit over the hatch well and hold 2 12's, really cheap off a friend. So I need a good amp, and 2 subs. If I wanted to spend, say $400, what would be the best setup that could buy at a place like Circuit City? I'd go $500 if I needed to, but you have an idea of my price range. Now how would my money best be spent?

The cheapest way from what you have is to buy the box off your friend, look for some decent subs and an amp at an auto sound shop (better variety, knowledgeable people), then shop around for the best deal you could find (probably not C/C unless you get a discount). $400 is do-able but $500 is safer....if you have to make any compromise put more money in the amp.

do you have polk db or ex series? I haven't been able to find 6x9 db series, but those are nice speakers. my sister runs two 12" subs with a coustic 65x2 amp and it sounds fine, thanks to the Alpine 7861 deck w/sub output. you already have a decent system (unless you have polk ex,I had those and thought they sucked) you can do quit well for $500,get an EQ if you have $$ left over.

If you only have 500 to blow, dont get 2 subs! Just get a 10' tube or box with a heathy sized amp(maybe even the Infinity bass link) Then get a 4 channel amp with the cash left over. Even if it is a cheaper one it will make you highs much better over the ****ty deck power.

Junkyard...I have a similar system to your sister's I guess...Polk DB and an Alpine 7861.
But anyway...I got the system today. I spent more than I had budgeted for myself, but I think everybody ends up doing that
I picked up a full box, rather than getting that hatch cover from my buddy. I ended up going with 3 MTX 10's and a 600 watt MTX amp. My friend and I are gonna throw it in tomorrow (didn't have time tonight, and hell if I'm handing the keys over to the jokers at CC). It sounded nice in the store, and I have a feeling it's gonna pound in my Camaro. I've heard systems in thirdgens before, and it's so much better to have the subs in the car, rather than the trunk. And the way the hatch glass goes right over it, our cars have awesome acoustics. I'll keep ya posted on the install and how it sounds.

MADDOG- That was what I wanted to spend between the subs and the amp. I spent about $250 on the deck, I don't remember the price on the 6X9's, somewhere in the $140-$180 range, $90 on the front speakers. I ended up spending $400 on the subs and the box, and like $300 on an amp. I spent more than I had intended, and had to get wiring and extended warranties. I love CC's extended warranties. They take stuff back and replace it no-questions-asked. Plus, if the exact model is no longer available, they give you credit for that amount. I've made out like a bandit on more than one occasion because of this. But at any rate, I'm not cheap or anything if that's what you're implying. I think by the time I've spent $1300 on stereo equipment I don't need to push it.
