help! Are they trying to rape me?
Related to my last thread only sub wise.
Ok so I take off work a few ho*&^
minuts early to take a look at some of these sound shops. I find similar if not the same 10in un loaded boxes they sell at wall mart for 30$ Ok so I talk to the actual owner and he tells me they custom make the boxes. So I ask him how much for a loaded box "an empty box isnt going to do much" He shows me some 10's then askes what kind of music I listen to "metal" then recomends MTX 3000 "the black cheap looking one, tiny magnet" and tells me 160$ for the setup 170$ installed
So I kindly say im very interested and back out of the shop having him think im coming back on payday. SO I go to another shop accross town and talk to an employee same spew as the owner of the other shop same box dimentions as the other shop "brown carpet box" but he recomends a JBL for 200$, 220$ installed$ Is it just cause im dressed like an insurance salesmen that they seem to bump up the price or what? I payed 200$ for 2 RF 10's and a custom plate 2 years ago! "Stolen in Denver
" Has the price gome up that much or are they trying to screw me? The wallmart stuff is starting to look good I can get this for 80$ http://www.jensen.com/mobile/non/sub...s/xs1110bp.htm and its at least got to be as good as a MTX or JBL in a small box.
Would that jensen fit W/O wife nagging modifacation? 12 1/2 x 15 x 16 1/2 . Or would it sound crappy?
Thanks SSC
Any opinions are welcome!
And those prices are for 1 10in sub only.

don't go jensen. the saying is very true in car audio; "you get what you pay for". if you have the money, try stepping up higher than the mtx 3000. i believe that is their lowest model. granted, i'm a broke college kid, but don't always grab something up because its cheaper. out of jensen, jbl, and mtx, deffinately go with an mtx sub. if you dont have the money, save up a bit longer. you'll be happy with the results.

Money isnt really an issue "yea a lie, its always an issue
" But really no.
I got the Jensen $88.55 and am going to at least try it out. If it sucks it can always go back . Its a sweet looking box and they sell the sub seprate from the box for 60$ that means 25$ for the box. Now if I can install it in the car w/o the wife finding out
"shes worse than my mom when it comes to audio stuff"
But do the prices the shops were quoting me sound reasonable? Im thinking if I were to go in there with some overalls on instead of a monkey suit the prices might drop.

Not too many people agree with me, but I reallly like the Jensen stuff for the price.
And those prices you got do sound about right. Most entry-level, name-brand subs (MTX, Rockford, JBL, et cetera) go for around $70-110 each for 10", although you can sometimes get a lower price when you buy two.
And a sealed single 10" box...I'm guessing around $50-60 for a pre-fab one, depending on the brand. A handmade one will naturally cost more, and should be made better...although that's not always the case.
I've heard the Jensen setup that has two 10s in it....it's decent not great...but it would be hard to beat it for the price. I'm sure the single one should fit that same description....try it out and let us know.

Do what I did... get a job at a retail store where you can cost accross the board!!
I work at Best Buy here in florida, I get cost + 5% which means I pay about $35.00 for speakers that normally cost about $180.00 YESS the markup and margin is THAT HIGH on some brands!! I picked up two 12" 600W MTX like 2 days ago for $13.00 a peice for my friend! I'm next....

But he said he could hook me up for about 100$ Now thats 60$ cheaper than the owner told me
So there has to be some markup because I doubt the guy would swipe the equiptment and loose his job but who knows, wai a week and he will probably offer it cheaper.
The best things in life come to those who wait, Naw Im a man therefor impatient
