Specific Volume?
Specific Volume?
Howdy, this post is in reference to an Infinity Perfect 12" that I bought a while back. Included with the speaker was a sheet from the factory suggesting very specific dimensions and volumes for speaker boxes to use. The Ported box that I prefer I didn't take the time to figure out how to make one fit, and never made one before anyway so I bought a Sealed box. The suggested Volume is 1 cf and the box I have is 1.2cf. Question is this, Is this an acceptable difference in volume or will it greatly affect the performance? Also, I had planned on spraying some Roadkill along the seams inside the box before I installed the woofer. Any thoughts, suggestions or anything would be much appreciated. Take care now
actually your box is just right. remember that the whole subwoofer inside the box is displacing some volume so that makes up for the .2 cu ft. of extra volume. My perfects are in a .88 ft^3 box and they sound fine.

I have been wondering if the manufacturer took the volume displaced by the rear of the sub into their consideration when making their dimension and volume suggestions. I don't imagine it'll make a whole lot of difference either way though but I do like to know. As for the wood suggestion, I have been playing with the idea of putting a boarrd in the bottom, or a brace of some kind; but once again would like more feedback. Thanks guys...

Sealed enclosures are not as volume-critical as ported and bandpass. You can vary the size a bit and get predictable results. 10 or 15% variations are barely noticable. Anyway, I usually like an enclosure bigger than what is reccomended. Most manufacturers reccomend an enclosure that will give a decent sound and a decent bump. I prefer a smoother, more accurate response even if it means a slight loss in sensitivity, so I build my boxes 15-20% larger than most manufacturer's specifications.
