My System (Pictures Inside)
Well here is my system so far. I'm posting this to possible give some people ideas (you can fit a sealed 12 and a 2 foot amp in without hindering t-top storage), and because everyone likes pictures
. The quality isnt the best, but you get the idea. Oh and all the speakers are actually round, the pictures are just a bit stretched for some reason... Those are DJ's kicks, if you wanted to see some more pictures of them installed. These are his old ones though, so they may look a bit different after the revision. Definatly worth the price, and they look great. Let me know what you think. Oh I know the head unit is old. It was in the car when I got it, and I'm waiting for cd/mp3 units to become more prominent.
There's a bunch of pictures, so just go here:

It looks cool.
Like:

Dont't like:

Nobody asked my opinion, but you know everyone will give theirs anyway.

. It seems to be a love or hate issue...but if you saw it in person you'd probably hate it less.I just noticed that it looks pink in the pictures...I'll have to take care of that with a little photo editing...
OK It's a bit better now...still not quite right though. Probably because I used a video camera to capture the images. I also took care of the stretching of the images.

I like it a lot. I love the interior color though. I was wondering what kind of speakers are in the back? 6½'s or 5¼'s? What brand? Do they sound good? Also, how did you mount them in? How much would I spend on a good component system? Thanks in advance.

WOW!
This is the first time I've seen a set of my kicks installed in a car! And a sitck no less! Looks like I got a good couple inches before the clutch pedal. Cool.
Guys, the new designs will have the same pedal clearance.
mike, do you mind if i use your pics on my website to show the pedal clearance and foot room ?

Nice Mike!
I like the color also!
The sail panel install is slick, but do you have a schematic of the bass blockers? Im assuming thats what the electronics are that are on the bottem.
But It looks really slick.
Oh props to DJS those kick pannels look like they could have come from a factory
!

Thanks for the compliments guys.
CD MaroMan 91,
The speakers in the back are CDT CL-6X 6.5" coaxials. They came with my seperates, and one of my 6x9's was blown, so I figured I'd put them in. They sound great. To mount them, I took out the metal piece that the 6x9 bolts into, and used it as a stencil to make the wooden pieces out of some wood that was just laying around. Cut the hole, soldered the speaker and crossover components together, and put it in the sail panel. The hardest part was putting the 7mm screws back that hold the piece in, since they're behind the plastic panel so you can't really fit a socket back there. I guess you could just take the plastic panel off, but it looked like more trouble than it was worth. For a component system, I'd say $200-300 would get you a nice set. Nice is of coarse an objective word however. You could probably get a decent set for around $150. I got the CDT CL-61 seperates. They're 90 RMS, 180 max, 6.5" mid, .75" silk tweeter...I really like them. They're CDT's middle line. If you want some good, more inexpensive, seperates, look into their Cambria series. Even though they're CDT's lowest line, I've heard good things about them. Plus they authorize internet sales, so you can order online and still get a warrenty.
DJSexay,
Go ahead.
SSC,
Not finding the sub-$2 capacitors they sell for $10 as bass blockers appealing (only 6 db/oct) I decided to build my own 12 db/oct (the crossover that came with my seperates is actually 60 db/oct
). It's really not hard at all. Just a capacitor in series with the speaker, followed by an inductor in parallel. I have a 200uF capacitor with a 6.8mH inductor to make a second order high pass filter at about 130 Hz. www.the12volt.com has some good info about building passive crossovers, and also another site was posted, I think it was www.caraudioresources.net, and go to Tech Articles. The very bottom piece on my panels is a fuse, more to protect the amp in case the crossover or speaker becomes a dead short for some reason, and the amp's protection circuitry doesn't kick in.
Pukka & Matt_91RSTPI,
Yes, it is built and sealed with 3/4" MDF with wood glue and liquid nails, with big screws every couple inches. It has about 1.1 cubic feet with the driver, which is the recommended sealed enclosure size for the sub. To get that volume, since the top of the box is so low, the box actually extends under most of the amp.

Oh and if anyone was curious, I forgot to mention about the amp. It's actually a 6 channel amp, putting out 50 RMS @ 12V x 6. Channels 1-4 run the kicks and sails, while 5-6 is bridged on the sub. 4 awg power/ground, 16 awg speaker wire (12 awg for the sub), all Monster Cable.

If you want to come up with your own dimensions, what I did was used a tape measure to make preliminary measurments, than used this cardboard stuff to make a kind of mock up to get the angles. From this I made final measurements, and came out with a prefect-fitting result.

It sounds great. Subs are non-directional, so it doesn't make as dramatic difference in aiming as opposed to tweeters. That's also the best way I could fit it, because my box is so shallow (in comparison to other thirdgen boxes).
