Amp Hookup.

is it just me or does this seem odd...my friend asked me what was wrong with his system, cuz his amp wont turn on, there is a red light, instead of a green, he has an alpine amp and i know that most likely means wrong voltage. so i look over his car, and he has the + on his amp hooked up to the - on his batt. he says that someone told him that was better for it. is he crazy? or am i for not hearing that before? obviously the amp didnt work and i can ALMOST see how this would work. but not really...any comments are welcome...help me figure out who in there right mind would suggest something of this sort!!

you see i knew that...but then i got to thinkin...hmmm...people wire subs that way (pos from amp to pos on sub1, neg on sub1 to pos on sub2, neg on sub2 to neg on amp) so i just thought maybe someone had the bright idea and got it to work with bat. that way too...haha...i hate when i talk to dumbass people, it makes me all confused!

the amp light was red instead of green because the amp went into protection mode. putting the positive wire to ground is the same as taking a jumper wire across the battery... not a good idea !! after he straightens out his wiring, id check all fuses just to make sure none of them are blown.

what you're talking about with the subs, is called wiring it "out-of-phase" in that case, when the sub's basket would move out to make a bass note, it would be inverted, and move inwards to make the bass note. People do this when they mount their sub inverted in a box (so that you see the basket, and not the cone) but its different doing that for a sub than for the power wires because one is dc and one is ac. im not 100% sure on the exact reason, but thats just the way it is.

The whole amp is designed around one polarity (some components that make up the amp, such as transistors, capacitors (some), etc. are polar.), because it's running on DC. In order to run a positive ground, you'd have to redesign the internals of your whole amp, for no real benifit.
