Go to a high-end shop and listen to everything they have in stock. Choose the ones you like the most. Any quality speakers will take abuse. I have Memphis 6.5's in my front without any rear speakers, they are rated at 50 watts RMS and you'll be deaf by the time they give in. Picking speakers consitists of two things: What you like and what you want to spend. There are speakers for $1k and there are speakers for $50. It's up to you. The same goes for the subs.
The only advice I can give you there is expect to pay more for an amp than the subs. I've seen too many people spend $200+/sub and buy a cheap amp claiming to put out 200 watts. There are two types of amps on the market today. Ones that are made to bring in sales (Best Buy and such) and amp that are made to put out quality sound (specialty shops) that don't care as much with sales and are more concerned with being the best. Make sure you know what you're dealing with. The best amps I've seen are Memphis. Everthing is good about them: low power draw, awesome SQ, great power, small size, and low heat. The only drawback is price. For the Studio amp they cost about $2.33 per watt. While some amps at Best buy are only 50 cents a watt or less.
Something to consiter,
Matt

matt couldnt of put that better. Like he says, listen to the speakers and pick out one you want. You ask what speakers are the best and youll get only our opinions. Veer away from the nation chain stores if possible. I got my polk audio componets at CC because Crutchfield sells them for the same price and shipping would be the same as the tax i spend.
If you go to quality shop, you'll see brands that look plain and black EX. Boston Acoustics. They arent for the flashy red with funky looking grilles (Sony ::yuck:
but go for quality. And who sees the speakers really anyway???
As for subs, pay more for a amp than subs. You get the popular Jensen and US Acoustic amps and youll see why. Same wattage as a Rockford but then turn them to the same volume and youll hear a clearer and louder sound. Listen to what you like and can offord. Amps that are commonly used in competitons around here are Alpine V12, Rockfords, PPI, kicker, and some excelon amps.

if you are kinda on a budget and want some great speakers, think about crystals. i have 3-way comps up front and a set of coax in the back and i love all of them. best part of all, both sets came to under $300 total. do a search on these speakers and you will find no bad reviews anywhere. but, i do agree, listen to a bunch of brands and pick what you like.
