Sub question
my friend bought the Alpine 10in bandpass box, its rated at 200wrms, and 400wpeak, i sold him a lightning audio B200.2, its rated at 200wrms, 400wpeak, it makes this funny smell, like the coil is burning up, thats only at loud volume, but the local audio shop says its overpowered, but they are trying to sell him a Rockford Fosgate POWER 360.2, which is way more power than that LA amp, so that would be more than over powering. help me out guys i dont understand what the deal is with this thing, i had 500rms goin to the same type of sub, and it didnt make that smell

Does it smell like two pennies being rubbed together?
I know that smell oh so well.
It's mainly caused from the heat present in the voice coil(s). It IS a sign that you are pushing the limits of those speakers. Or that they are not obtaining an amount of air that is sufficient to keep the voice coils cool. A common problem with bandpass boxes.
About the only cure that you can count on right now, is don't push the speakers a lot for an extended amount of time. If he wants to show off the system, give the speakers a little time to cool off before pushing them.

that smell is the voice coil of the subs burning up. your amp is causing DISTORTION. distortion is caused by an amp that doesn't put out clean sound at high volume. so changing your amp might work. but your problem also lies in a sub that can't handle a lot of power and having a bandpass box. the box is designed so that you can't hear the distortion, but it's still there. try building a sealed box with the same amp and sub. If you hear distortion, don't turn it up any louder. If you wan't more volume than what you hear, replace the amp and sub. any ???? e-mail me at custm92@aol.com
lol i know that the coil is burnin a little, but i was just wondering y the shop was tryin to sell my buddy a more powerful amp when they said the one in there is to powerful already
as it turns out, my friend had the gain CRANKED up, so i turned it down until i couldnt hear any clipping out of the port of the box, so i think its fixed now
