Subs in a convertible
Hey guys I've read all the previous posts about putting subs into the trunk of a convertible, but I didn't find exactly what I was looking for. Did anybody just put one sub, say about a 10" and an amp back and still have like half the trunk empty for other use??? I'm still in highschool and I need some trunk space no matter how small it is to begin with for books, sports equipment and stuff. So if anybody has pics or any ideas of how it can be done please help. Thanks guys

I met a guy who mounted a self powered bazooka tube to the the trunk lid, it looked nice and he said it did the job. I can't remember his name though.

I've got a 91 Vert and have a 12" fosgate sub in the trunk.
Below are a couple of pics of the set-up.
I'm currently downgrading in audio gear to make more room in the trunk area.
In the pictures below you'll see I have two amps, and I had a Sony crossover ontop of the sub box as well. (where you see the loose wires hanging)
I'm getting rid of this sub set-up and I'm going to buy the Infinity Basslink which has a much smaller footprint and should provide a good amount of bass from what I've heard and read through the internet.
The Bazooka's tend to be a bit overated IMO.
I've heard a few of the Bazooka models and I was not impressed with the type of bass they provide.
The infinty will provide a much smoother bass than the bazooka.
As for going with a set-up like you see below.
I have a 200 watt amp hooked up to the 12" sub, and when I crank it up the whole car vibrates! The only place where I went wrong with this set-up is the under powered amp.
The fosgate wants alot of power in order to drive the sub and the 200 watt amp is not enough, it get's hot after about 4 hours of driving the amp hard and tends to cut off until it cools down.
The measurements of the box is.....
15.5" tall X 25.5" long X 10.5" wide.
So you can see it fills the trunk up pretty well.

thats a pretty good setup, but i'm sure that ran you upwards of $250 yet still used majority of the trunk space. I need something that uses up max half the trunk space as trunk space is precious to me, yet my new infinity reference just give me enough bass. I was thinking the infinity basslink on ebay runs for about 216 plus shipping. But then again I don't have that kind of money yet, i was looking to buy a good 8-10" sub with an amp powerful enough for 150, not including the parts for the box and everything which i would make myself. Anybody have any ideas of what setups to use, or how big the box should be? where to get it from?? anything would help, thanks guys

Omega: I think that was me (with the 92 convert). you bought my flowmaster muffler.
Sorry for this long post...I have a small system in my z convert that does me pretty good. It isn't the highest quality, loudest, greatest stuff, but it is pretty good and fairly inexpensive.
With such small trunk space to begin with, I had the same prob as you, nikh23, that i wanted to keep trunk space. So, I mounted an 8" Jensen bass tube and a small 2 channel Jensen amp upside down under the trunk lid. SEE PIC:
http://www.fasidemedia.com/personal/.../trunksub1.jpg
I know, I know, lots of people here hate Jensen but I've had pretty good luck with them. the tube i got at Wal Mart (of all places) for like $70 and the amp I think was just a little over $100. the nice thing about this is there is still lots of trunk space. See Larger Pics:
http://www.fasidemedia.com/personal/.../trunksub2.jpg
http://www.fasidemedia.com/personal/.../trunksub3.jpg
The amp:
http://www.fasidemedia.com/personal/.../trunksub4.jpg
Hehe notice the snow brush holding the trunk lid up...unfortunately it is too heavy for those cheesy GM struts. I suppose I could replace them but that would cost money and my mom gave me the snow brush
the support is made from 90 degree aluminum brackets that are mounted to the trunk lid. the amp and sub are then mounted to them. One important note with this: I should have put a layer of Dynomat or some insulation underneath the aluminum, because the trunk lid will rattle (not as much as you would think, though) and you hear it with the top down.
Driving this setup is a Jensen 1.5 din head unit (i know i know i get enough from my "Pioneer" friends about Jensen). I chose it because it has CD AND Tape, as well as 4 preamp outputs and like 25 watts on each channel. If you look under the cigarette lighter, there is a small black ****. Behind that is Radio Shack part number 271-215. It is a stereo 10K audio control with a single pole switch on it. What that means: The preamps from the head unit go to that giving me an independent volume control for the sub. The switch part has the +12 remote turn on for the amp, so by turning the **** all the way down, there is a click and that shuts off the amp. Best $1.99 I ever spent! PIC OF INSIDE:
http://www.fasidemedia.com/personal/...carstereo1.jpg
Please excuse the ugly floormats...i use them during the week to keep the OEM carpet and mats in perfect condition, like this:
http://www.fasidemedia.com/personal/.../interior1.jpg
Yes those are the original mats and carpet on this '92!
The other speakers I have are Pioneer 4x6 2ways in the dash, and Pioneer 6 1/2 3way round in the rear panels. They do fit with a little bit of finesse, as well as bastardizing the OEM speakers and stealing the mounting ring.
This gives me pretty good bass. I don't think you can really do much more and still be able to get 2 toolboxs, and 3-4 duffle bags in the trunk. It is a bit quieter with the top down (as the top is in between you and the sub) but it still sounds pretty good for the small investment.
I have never posted a pic of my car at all on here, so if you're interested here are a couple. I will put some in reader's rides when I take a few more.

WOW!, thats a very nice car you have there, pristine shape. Pretty nice setup too, but just one question, wouldn't mounting the amp and tube to the trunk lid be teh same as just mounting them on the bottom of the well? Because when you close the lid it's going to take up the same amount of space? Either way very impressive job, too bad all that work was used for jensen equipment, just jk! One last question, how big of a tube can you fit in the well and is it possible to mount it vertically against one of the sides rather than horizontallly?

yes it takes up exactly the same amount of space. but...this space is at the top leaving you floor space to put toolboxes, duffle bags, whatever you like. you can't hang a toolbox from the trunk lid!
i have never tried putting anything else back there, but I imagine you could probably get a 10" tube on the floor of the well. The clearance would be real tight around the bulge for the trunk latch, but it should fit. Thing is that then you lose the well space and then you have unusable space on top of it.
haha jensen stuff i get the same crap from friends until they hear it! Jensen makes some pretty LOUSY equipment, I'll tell you that now. but the head unit is their top of the line, as is the amp which has decent enough performance to power that little sub which has amazing output for an 8" that I got at WalMart for $70!!! Point I make is that at 70 mph with the top down, it doesn't matter what you have.
My last car (86 t/a) I had the same sub, but powered by a Radio Shack amp that I found on the floor in the backroom...the manager let me have it for $10. Beautiful amp
...had 10% harmonic distortion!!!! but for that little sub in the trunk it was ok. guess that doesn't say much about the sub, but it is adequate for a daily driver. It is by no means a system that people will hearing thumping when you drive up the street, but for normal listening it is great.
hey thanks for the compliments on the car. i love these machines, but it's in the family. this one came from dad about 2 years ago..he kept it garaged and only drove it in the summer. I only drive it like 5 miles to work everyday, and rarely in the snow so it gets babied plenty!

Hey,
Sorry for the long delay!
My taillights doesn't rattle, but the trunk lid and the springs/wire thingys that holds the conv't tonneu cover open while putting up/down the top - rattles some. Oh, and my spoiler is rattling too - but Im fixing that shortly!!
The box is the same as for coupes, and I bought that one for $85 from a company called Insane Audio a couple of years ago - but their website isn't working anymore, so Im not sure if they are still in business.

Yes TOPLESZ you are the one that i was talking about. By the way, i put the muffler on and man does she sound mean!!
Anyway. If you still want trunk space Toplesz has a very good idea... but if you want the typical bog boomy sound then go for one like Pete92TA.
Guys, i must say i have seen Toples' car in person and these pics will never do it justice. It still looks like he has only had it a week from when it rolled off the assembly line!

Mine does have good boom, but it can also be very tight with the top up. Great bass for whatever music you like rap or rock.

I have a 91 vert. and after lookin gat all these trunks i do have a question. on either side of the trunk I do not have the molded plastic pieces like a normal thirdgen and some of you do...the sides of my trunk are just molded carpet, on the left it forms a shelf, and on the right it just covers the "hole" for the jacks, is this stock, or I am missing something? oh well just a thought that is going through my head right now. steve

well i don't know if you guys remember but DJ Sexay had a dual 10" set up that used very little space...it was for his wifes car and he put a 16 gauge steel grill on top of it so you could place things there....well i am trying to do that with dual 12s...Alpine Type Rs .8 cu feet of space each and mount the amps unside down on the trunk lid.
WHO BOUGHT THAT....right before i could....
I would love the dimentions to that box....yeah i have designed my own but i dunno....it would be nice to have a box that i know would work and fit and all.

I bought a pair of JBL 10's for my 'vert and they need little airspace to "hit" and the guy at the audio place said they are perfect for what I want to do... just use the lower trunk area and have the upper area for storage. when I get everything figured out I'll post some pics! My problem is getting 6x9's or 4x6's to fit in the back panels and still look close to original.
yep, JL W6s....the 10s need .5 - .8 and DJ sexays box had .7 and looked great and had a 16 gauge grill over the subs that was then convered in some fabric and it looked great and you could still but some heavy stuff on top.... Oh well i can make my own it just would be a **** load easier if knew some more about that box b/c that is what i want...i may make it .8 tho....
