Upgrading to larger woofers...I have a question though

Ok, currently, as my signature says, I have two 10'' Rockford Punch woofers...I plugged one of the port holes in the box to sorta "overdrive" them (it worked too..they are louder, and still maintain clarity because of the one hole still being open)...anyway...the woofers are definately straining up top though. If I upgraded to 12 inch woofers, but kept my amp (Rockford 160a2 266 watt total bridged power), would the 12s be able to go AT LEAST as loud as the 10s I have now, despite the fact that the 12s could be driven my more power? Would they go softer than the tens even with the gain and punch all the way up? (and by the way, for all Rockford fans...what the hell does that damn "punch" dial do anyways besides make them hit TOO hard and distort)?

The 12s would play a tad louder because in general, larger subs have a higher sensitivity, but you'll get much, much bigger gains by upgrading to a bigger amp. That little itsy-bitsy amp is a HUGE bottleneck.

I think you are missing something very important here .... in a ported box the internal volume and the port length are designed SPECIFICALLY for a PARTICULAR subwoofer (ie.- the t/s parameters of the driver). It sound to me like the subs you have in your box were not the subs used to design the box and you have a poor box-sub match. If you just go out and buy 2 12s and cut out the holes in your box to install them - it may make your situation much worse! 12s should be slightly louder than 10s but I doubt you could REALLY tell the difference. So .... I'd either get a good box that matches your subs, or dump your box & subs and get a new box & 12" subs. If you don't give a crap about any of this, then ... yeah ... a bigger amp will probably make your setup louder.
