bad alternator due to amp?

On the 25th of Feb., I got a new amp. It is a pretty powerful amp. While I was out driving about a week later, my batttery died. I found out that the alternator was bad, but the battery was fine, just a little discharged.
My question is, could my new amp be the cause of the alternator going up, or could it just be because it is 11 years old?
Thanks for any help.

The higher the load placed on the alt, the harder it will work, but considering its 11 years old, it prolly would have died at the same time as if you didn't put in the amp.
