Stock Sound System? Crap or Decent?
I'm not keen on making my camaro an import wanna be with X-plod speakers and all this crap - so are the stock speakers in the car decent or no? I know it depends upon use/age, but just in general?

i've owned 4 camaros ranging from 84 z28 to my current 91 z28 and i couldn't get over how sh*tty the speakers and radio's were. just putting in an aftermarket radio make a world of difference (less distortion), but i would definitely recommend changing the entire system. you don't need to go crazy with your setup. just get a good radio, replace the stock speaker and your set. you don't even need an amp if your new radio has enough power.

My vote is crap. they probably cost 2 bucks to make. I would upgrade them for sure. There are some pretty nice plates out there with a 4 and a tweeter in them for reasonable prices. This will make a world of difference.

Yeah man, ditch those stock paper cones. A good aftermarket set with all the usual aftermarket benefits (rubber surrounds which let the speaker flex more, composite cones which don't get affected by heat, separate tweeter/midrange units) will sound much better than the stock crap. The newer radios will drive speakers quite well without an amp.
I'd push the Pioneer 3300-up series on you.. the amp is incredible, and you wouldn't need a remote amp for your inside speakers. You could add a small amp for one 10" sub in a small box, and you'd have a helluva system. I helped a friend install a 3300 in his truck, with stock speakers, and no amp, and it woke those speakers up! If he had aftermarket speakers, it'd sound even better.. and when he adds a sub, look out! I have a much higher level Pioneer head unit, and it even woke up my amplified inside speakers. The 3300-up series (with SFEQ) have crossovers built in that direct the proper frequencies to the proper speakers.
Altho I wouldn't use Sony equipment, though.. besides, maybe, an amp.
the older stock systems suck, but the newer delco stuff is quite impressive, my family has a 99 grand am and a 97 jimmy, bith have stock systems with really good decks and they pound pretty good.
the older delcos suck because they are paper.

My best friends mom has a new Pontiac Aztec with the Pioneer sound system... it sounds REALLY good! But First I'd go with a new head unit. DON'T GET STONY X-PLOD! I swear.. My deck is screwed up... my friend had a really good X-Plod amp... and it just quit working one day. I know a lot of people that have had probs with it. But my friend got the Pioneer DEH-1400... Pioneers 3-Way 6x9's in his 88 Toyota and WOW it sounds great! He's even got the lil truck box from Wal-Mart because he didn't have enough money yet for what he REALLY wants in his truck... so his dad gave him that. It's got two 6½ mids in there and two tweeters and it sounds great right up against the back seat. Nothing awesome but no distortion when up loud and it's really clear. So first spend about $150-$200 on a good cd player... then I'd go with front speakers first then the back. Check eBay for some good plate 4x6's and some good 6½'s or 6x9's for the back.
Yeah, if you pull the plastic grills off of the grand am or the jimmy, you'll see the same deal: cheap speakers. And I'd bet that a new deck would be a seriouse upgrade over the stock one. Just an unfortunate fact about the vast majority of mass-produced stock systems.
