My soundstage sucks
I got done putting some Boston 4x6 plate speakers into my GTA, and so far everything I've listened to is coming from one spot in the middle of the dash. I have no soundstage at all. It's like the two speakers are being fed a mono signal. I'm using the Alpine that worked just fine in my IROC a couple days ago, so I'm looking elsewhere. I'm going to try reversing the polarity of 1 speaker, but I suspect that if they were out of phase that my soundstage would be very diffuse, and not pinpointed at the center of the dash.
Anybody else have any suggestions?

Man not very often you ask a question. Anyway i have an older alpine amp and on mine there is a switch for mono, 1+2ch, and stereo. i don't know if yours has this feature but its the only one i can think of.
ug, sorry ta hear bout that bud, hmm... i missed your post on why you have 4x6's again.... foot space or something?
sorry ta hear bout that, but your saying that when they were in your other ride, they had no probs but now switched they do?

Well, I switched the polarity on one of the speakers, and it's now like it should be. The image is fuzzy and unfocused, but at least I've got a wide soundstage.
In other news, I installed a nice Denon deck into my Sport Coupe. It's got a red display. Oh my. I love red. It would match the IROC perfectly. Now I'm caught in a dilemma. I really would like a bit of a nicer deck for the IROC, but I finally found a red deck to match my dash lights. Decisions decisions...

just get a deck you like, then make it red. That's what I did to my 7949.

DJ, how did you change the colors? I thought All of the new decks have the multi-color, sealed display? I didn't think it was like the old units that you could just change the backlight color on?
DT, I got it and responded, but my email has been FUBAR lately. I responded the last time you sent me that email, but I'm guessing that you never got it. Let me know if you don't get this one.

my alpine had little green rubber covers over the lights. I just replaced those with red ones I got from PartsExpress.com . The actual lcd display retains it's multi colors, but all the buttons now light up red.

Jim, when you say polarity you mean switching the wires from negative to positive right? This has an effect huh? I have a terrible soundstage in my car. crappy sub, top of the line rockford 6x9's and 4x6's. i have my amp powering the 6x9's and the sub, and my deck pushing the 4x6's. for some reason, when i fade it all the way to the front, i still can barely hear the 4x6's. when i fade it to the middle i can't hardly hear them over the blasting 6x9's. I hate my 4x6's..... any suggestions for now till i get kicks?

Was just reading the thread here... one person's balance problem could be the deck driving the dash 4X6's... Had that problem before, but the new upgrade included Infinity Kappa plates (60W rating - one of the higher ratings out there) driven by my Sony 4x75 amp, with the with the cutoff at 300hz. Problem solved...
Now for the imaging problem from the dash, I'm currently installing Polk MOMO tweeters that will be mounted in "pods" I am building that will suspend vertically downward from the dash - the LH one near the light switch cluster, and the RH one just to the right of the center A/C duct. It won't exactly be "symmetrical", but the distance to my ears will be very close (who cares about the passenger heheheh). Since the upper frequencies are VERY directional, and the tweeters DO swivel, this should prove to be quite interesting...

Twinkies, I switched the polarity of just 1 speaker. This changes their phase relative to each other, which can cause some major differences in sound.
Janna, I can't imagine having anywhere near equal path lengths in the position you're talking about. That seems like the path length diffence would be even worse than the dash. I can reach the light switch without even extending my arm. With my arm fully extended, I'm like 4 feet from the other side. That's a HUGE difference in path length.

the signal path is about 26 inches on the left side, and about 29 inches on the right. The LH being just above the light switch, and the RH just to the right of the CENTER UPPER A/C ducts.
Hopefully that made more sense this time!

Oh. Kinda makes for a narrow soundstage, but whatever floats your boat I guess.
