Will a new head unit really help my sound????

Okay, I currently have:
-Crappy JVC CD player with no pre-outs (I'm using converters)
-Kenwood KAC-648S 4 channel 280 watt amp
-4x6 Pioneer speakers in the front
-6x9 Pioneer speakers in the rear
I have a high pass filter for the front speakers, and the rears are running at full range. Overall, the system sounds really good. My question is, will adding an Alpine/Pioneer/Kenwood head unit with 2 preouts really help the sound that much? I don't want to go spend a couple hundred bucks if it's not really gonna help that much. I also plan on adding a subwoofer soon. Do you guys think that it would be beneficial then to run 2 of the channels in the amp for the rear speakers, 2 for the sub, and then just run the fronts strait from the head unit with bass blockers on them? Also, what is the point in having 3 sets of preouts? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Yes! Replacing a low priced JVC with a quality deck with pre-outs will provide a very noticable improvement. The new deck will have better sound quality than the JVC, plus eliminating the high level converters will result in less distortion and a higher level signal getting to your amps.
