I need a new system for my 84 Trans Am since the old one is pretty pathetic. However, I know jack about all this stereo stuff. Could you guys make up a list of stuff I need for good sound listening to rock music? I don't want any subs or amps just yet, I need the cash for other stuff. I need a new head unit, dash speakers and the 6x9's for the back. Im looking to spend around $300-$350. thanks.

First of all I woulden't go cheap on anything, this is my advice to anyone buying a new stereo. If you do than you will be forced to upgrade later and you will be left with 'cheap' equiptment. What you need to do first is look and listen to every speaker you can find (from sony/consumer stuff to CDT/Focal), keeping the cost of each in your mind. Since the high end stuff is out of your budget use them as referance speakers and compare them to other brands in your price range.
As far as headunits, a decent HU will cost around $200. So for now I say run speakers off the factory unit if it is functioning well and you want to upgrade later. If you only want to spend $300-350 then you will need to make serious cutbacks on your speakers/HU. Kickpanels offer a much better placement of your speakers vs. your dash, but if you don't have the money or are satisfied with dash speakers go with dash and save some money.
I'm done ranting off my ideas,
Matt

Even just getting speakers and new head unit will put you over budget. My thoughts for a solid foundation would be in this order:
1: Kickpanels (ofcourse
) and nice components. Infinity, entry level MB Quart, Polk, etc ...
2: New head unit
3: 6x9's if you want back speakers. My preference is to not have them
Then, you have a nice foundation to upgrade and add amps and sub too later on. My personal opinion is that front speakers make more of a difference in a stereo than any other single component. Think about it, the front speakers are in front of you, and play a bulk of the music. I would not skimp there.

go kick panels definently... i just got mine in and they sound great... i have a Polk Audio EX 6½" component set in running off of a 100.2 Fosgate Amp. I had 4x6's and 6x9's at one time but they do nothing compared to the kicks and comp set... at first i thought it was kinda wasting money but I'm definently not turnin to anything else
