If you don't mind installing it yourself, check out ebay. I picked up my top of the line Hornet for $90

The equipment is important but installation is even more important. If you do alot of research to figure everything out first then the whole job is no big deal. Your best bet, if you really are worried about thieves, is to find a good installer. He will be able to point you to good equipment.

DEI(Directed Electronics Inc.) makes a lot of good security products. They are the company that manufactures Viper,Hornet,Your Valet, and Sidewinder alarms, just to name a few. They have a lot of dependable sensors and trigger mechanisms. Also,Clifford and Code Alarm are good brands. But the best sec system isn't worth anything if the install isn't any good.

Dei, all the way. I install for a living and see alot of alarms. The ones I see with the least amount of problems are DEI. Clifford is good and now is owned by DEI. Historicaly cliffords have one down fall, the alarm. Also dont go to best by when getting stuff installed. Go to a place with MECP certified technitions. As said before the alarm is only as good as the install. If you have any questions about what features to look for drop me a line. Later, Jered 1983SS camaro

I will add to the praise for DEI. I have used their alarms quite a bit over the years and am more than happy with my current Python alarm.

One word of advice though, let a professional shop install the alarm (not a chain shop like BB or CC or any of those hack shops)

A top quality installer can take just about any alarm and make it perform well. Simple things such as hiding the brain, blending the alarm wires with the rest of the vehicle wiring (routing, tie wrapping, flex-loom, etc..) can make all the difference when someone is looking to disable an alarm. If you can't find the obvious wiring, it makes it more difficult to disarm.

Do not cut corners. But also remember, an alarm will not stop a pro from taking the whole car, but it may stop the joy rider from busting your windows and ripping your deck out of your dash.

Good luck.

Even with a good install,Your alarm is only as good as the people willing to pay attention to it.My stuff was taken in the middle of the day in a wal-mart parking lot.Oh Yeah,The Alarm worked like it was supposed to!If they want your stuff bad enough,it's theirs.

Buddy, the rest of these guys are on the right track. Forget about alarm brands... you should be shopping for a good installer. You'll probably want to just buy what he recommends....but DEI is pretty much the only thing left on the market these days anyway, and their stuff's pretty good.

What estimated prices do the installs run? I've been thinking about buying one. I have these older neighbors that loves to feed the wondering cats in my neighborhood and they love to jump on the hood of my cars. Is there someway that could still use the alarm without having to constantly turn it off due to these little bastards?

I was quoted $400 for the Hornet 533T and installation. Most places will not install an alarm if you don't buy it from them. I was quoted $250-350 and $60 hr when i wanted mine installed after i bought it off ebay

jobryan26:
Yes, you can keep the alarm and not have to worry about cats walking all over the car. All you need to do it turn the sensitivity down on the motion sensor. There is a little pot switch in the module.
