Who sprays undercoating in their sub boxes?

I've heard of people spraying that black rubber undercoating in their sub boxes. Does it just seal it up better, or is there a dampening effect as well? Also, does the uneven surface it creates have negative effects on the sound waves?

I think I remember Jim saying something about doing something like that. Maybe he could shed some light on it.

I spray mine. Does it matter? Probably not. I do it for 2 reasons. The first is just one more level of protection incase I missed a spot when I siliconed it. If there are any pinholes in the silicone, or if there's a small gap, the undercoating will fill it in. Secondly, it adds a minimal amount of damping to the box. The rough surface will not have any negative effects on the sound, and if anything, the irregular surface will help to minimize reflections of high frequency harmonics.

Thanks, if it can't hurt anything, I might just do it before putting the box in my car.

If you do spray the stuff, let it dry a bit. Just to make sure that you don't have nasty stuff floating around inside your box that might cause problems with the surrounds on the subwoofers. I for one would just use fiberglass resin. An MDF box isn't completely sealed (if you don't believe me, take a shop back and put two pieces of MDF together.. you can pick the bottom piece up right through the top piece).
