Question about choke heater.......

Now I've got my choke to receive a proper voltage through the c/h relay only with the engine running. Questions? While engine runs should the voltage to choke heater remain constant or should the relay vary it? Or is the relay there to allow the choke to function only with the engine running? Will that constant voltage to choke damage it ?

Car: 82 camaro SC
Engine: 350
Transmission: 700r4
Should get a constant 12V when the engine is running.

The relay turns power to the choke off when the car isn't running, ie. when the alternator isn't charging. This is why the choke light also doubles as an alternator light.
